For more than a decade, Riot’s League of Legends has stood as one of the most influential games in the industry, shaping competitive play, esports, and live-service design.

Even as the game continues to attract millions of players worldwide, shifting player expectations and evolving technology are pushing long-running titles to rethink how they grow and stay relevant over time.

Riot’s League of Legends is preparing for its most ambitious transformation to date, as Riot Games is working on a sweeping internal overhaul aimed at modernizing the long-running MOBA for the years ahead.

The project, known internally as League Next, is positioned as a foundational refresh that goes beyond routine updates, signaling a major shift in how Riot plans to evolve its flagship title.

Importance: The overhaul of Riot’s League of Legends marks a strategic move to future-proof one of gaming’s biggest live-service titles, showing that long-running games must reinvent their foundations — not just add content — to stay relevant and competitive.

Riot reorganizes internal teams to support the long-term development of League Next

According to people familiar with the plans, Riot’s League of Legends will be reimagined across multiple fronts, including a refreshed visual style of champions, environments, and the user interface, alongside deep technical changes designed to make future updates faster and easier to deliver.

    Rebuilding the New-Player Experience

Riot is also rebuilding the new-player experience, introducing cleaner onboarding systems and more accessible controls to lower the barrier for newcomers.

Internally, the company has reorganized teams to support this long-term effort, which comes as Riot balances League’s gradual player decline against the stronger financial performance of Valorant, while refocusing its business following layoffs and a pullback from non-core projects under Tencent ownership.
