The retro gaming revival is in full swing, with developers breathing new life into long-forgotten classics. From pixelated adventures to early 3D shooters, beloved titles of the 90s are finding their way back into the spotlight.
This time enhanced for modern hardware, and now, fans of dark fantasy and old-school FPS action are in for a surprise they probably didn’t expect on PlayStation.
Two of the most iconic dark fantasy FPS games from the 90s—Heretic & Hexen—have officially launched on PS5 and PS4 in a newly enhanced bundle. Developed in collaboration with id Software and Nightdive Studios, this re-release marks the first time Heretic has ever appeared on PlayStation.
While Hexen makes return after its original PS1 port in 1997, the collection brings a wealth of modern upgrades, including 4K resolutions, 120FPS performance on PS5, mod support, 16-player deathmatches, and even brand-new episodes for both games—for just $14.99.
A physical edition is also on the way via Limited RUN Games.
Importance: The return of Heretic & Hexen on PS5 and PS4 marks a major step in preserving 90s gaming history while proving that classic titles can thrive with modern enhancements. It also reflects broader industry shift towards reviving legacy games for new audiences.

Heretic & Hexen: Pioneers Of Fantasy FPS
Originally released in 1994 and 1995 by Raven Software and published by id Software, Heretic & Hexen: Beyond Heretic helped pioneer the fantasy-first-person-shooter genre, thanks to their use of a modified DOOM engine.
These groundbreaking titles introduced elements rarely seen in FPS games at the time, including vertical aiming, inventory management, and unique character classes, leaving a lasting impact on the evolution of shooter mechanics.
Modern Visuals And Gameplay Overhaul
Now, thanks to the joint efforts between id Software and retro specialists Nightdive Studios, both titles have been reintroduced to a new generation with a comprehensive visual and gameplay overhaul. The inclusion of two entirely new campaigns makes this release even more special.
These episodes were crafted using the original technology, but without the constraints of outdated hardware—allowing for much more ambitious level design and gameplay.
According to id Software’s Senior Programmer Mike Rubits, these new additions offer a completely fresh experience for both returning fans and newcomers. The full bundle is now available digitally for $14.99, and collectors will be able to purchase edition soon via Limited Run Games.
