Larain Studios’ future direction has become a major talking point following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, with new comments from studio leadership offering fresh insight into how the developer views its next chapter.
While the RPG was both a critical and commercial triumph, recent remarks suggest there was more going on behind the scenes than players may have realized.
Larian Studios has clarified its long-term direction following Baldur’s Gate 3, with CEO Swen Vincke explaining the mindset that led the studio to step away from licensed projects.
Speaking about Larian D&D after Baldur’s Gate 3, Vincke indicated that the team is now focused on work that better aligns with its creative ambitions, signaling a shift toward internally owned projects rather than continuing within the Dungeons & Dragons framework.
Importance: At a broader level, Larian D&D after Baldur’s Gate 3 underscores how creative freedom can outweigh even massive commercial success, potentially influencing studios to favor original IPs over licensed franchises.

Creative Constraints of Working Within D&D
Expanding on Larian D&D after Baldur’s Gate 3, Vincke explained that while the RPG went on to become a critical and commercial phenomenon, the development process itself did not leave the studio creatively fulfilled.
Baldur’s Gate 3, which exists within the Dungeons & Dragons universe owned by Wizards of the Coast, placed Larian inside external constraints that ultimately dampened enthusiasm, despite the game winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023 and surpassing 20 million sales.
Return to Divinity Sparks Internal Excitement
By contrast, the studio’s return to Divinity—an IP it fully owns—has reignited excitement internally, a feeling Vincke said was missing during parts of the D&D-focused development cycle.
He also reiterated that Larian briefly considered Baldur’s Gate 4 before deciding that moving on felt liberating, allowing the studio to pursue multiple original RPG projects without the limitations tied to a licensed universe.
