Nintendo recently unveiled Mario and Luigi: Brothership, the first new installment in the Mario & Luigi series in nearly nine years, sparking considerable excitement among fans. The game is scheduled to launch on November 7 for the Nintendo Switch this year.

However, the announcement has also led to widespread curiosity about the game’s development team, especially since the original developer, AlphaDream, went bankrupt in 2019.

Addressing these concerns, a Nintendo representative shared with Game File, as per VGC, that,

“Some of the original developers who worked on the franchise are involved in the development of Mario & Luigi: Brothership.”

Importance: It’s been nearly nine years since the last new Mario & Luigi game, so the anticipation for a new installment after almost a decade is immense. The fact that the original developers are working on the game also raises hopes for a classic Mario & Luigi experience.

Despite this hint, further details about the development team are being kept under wraps, with Nintendo advising fans to check the game’s credits upon release for more information.

This revelation has done little to quell speculation, as several prominent AlphaDream developers have continued their careers with or in collaboration with Nintendo. For example, Hiroyuki Kubota, formerly AlphaDream’s development manager, joined Monolith Soft, a studio under Nintendo’s umbrella.

Additionally, series director and producer Yoshihiko Maekawa was recently involved in supervising the Nintendo Switch remake of Mario RPG, and producer Akira Otani remains a part of Nintendo.

Nintendo’s secrecy about the developers behind its recent projects is not a new tactic. Previously, the company withheld the identity of the new voice actor for Mario in Super Mario Wonder until early copies of the game were available.

Similarly, the developer of the Switch’s Super Mario RPG remained undisclosed until information surfaced on a store page. The same approach was seen with Princess Peach Showtime, where Nintendo did not confirm if Good-Feel was working on the project.

The involvement of original developers hints at a faithful continuation of the beloved series. However, the exact identities and roles of these developers remain a mystery.
