Orion is a streaming technology that was unveiled by Zenimax, a sofware developed by by id Software, a subsidiary of Zenimax, that would focus on optimizing game engines for streaming purposes.

Since its unveiling, there has been little to no information about the technology, leading many to assume the project was canceled, especially after Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax in 2021, which likely brought restructuring that could have halted the project.

However, it appears that the Orion Streaming Technology is still in development. According to the LinkedIn profile of Shale William, a Technical Specialist at id Software, Orion Streaming Technology is mentioned prominently in the about section, implying the project is still being worked on. This detail was reportedly not present before, as noted by internet explorer bogorad222.

The goals of the Orion Streaming Technology are to reduce latency, bandwidth requirements, and the amount of cloud computing power needed to stream video games.

This will be achieved through various techniques implemented within a software development kit (SDK). Developers can integrate this SDK into their game engines, resulting in an improved streaming experience.

If successful, this technology would enable high-quality game streaming with lower bandwidth usage, improve accessibility of demanding games for users with less powerful hardware, and reduce latency for more responsive gameplay.

The lack of recent updates has raised serious concerns about the project’s development, but it’s encouraging to see signs of hope. While this doesn’t confirm whether the project is still in development, it does suggest that it may still be alive.
