Sony’s Astro Bot Controller Already Being Scalped For Twice Its Price

Astro Bot is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated PlayStation titles this year, with early previews generating a lot of excitement. To market the game and offer a collectible for fans, Sony recently announced the DualSense Astro Bot controller, which quickly gained attention online due to its adorable design.

The pre-orders for the Astro Bot controller went live recently, and due to the heightened demand, the limited edition controllers sold out swiftly. Unfortunately, scalpers were quick to seize the opportunity, purchasing units to resell at inflated prices.

Sony initially set the price for the limited edition controller at $79.99, but scalpers are now listing it for as much as $200—over twice the original price, representing nearly a 150% increase.

Importance: Scalping has become a significant issue, especially in the gaming industry. This problem is particularly prevalent with limited edition items, which are often in short supply and highly susceptible to being targeted by scalpers. This practice not only inflates prices but also makes it difficult for genuine fans to acquire these sought-after products.

The average price point at which scalpers are selling the Astro Bot controller on eBay is around $150, with one scalper even listing it for a staggering $198.99. This is an extremely outrageous demand.

Scalpers are undermining the chances of a fair buying experience for the average consumer. Some of them even use advanced techniques, such as bots, to purchase products in bulk the moment they go live, leaving little opportunity for genuine fans to secure the product.

Now that the Astro Bot controller is fully sold out, fans who missed out on the pre-order are left with two options: either miss out on the limited edition controller altogether or pay the inflated prices set by scalpers.

We hope that the issue of scalping is addressed in the future and that major companies like Sony take legal action against those who engage in this practice. A fair buying environment with reasonable prices is something we should all strive for.
