The gaming industry is entering a period of rapid transformation as technology, player habits, and platform strategies evolve. With major companies rethinking how games are delivered and experienced, the divide between traditional hardware and emerging ecosystems is becoming increasingly blurred.

As competition intensifies and new opportunities open across platforms, industry leaders are beginning to share insights into what the next decade of gaming could look like.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has suggested that the future of the industry is steadily shifting toward open PC ecosystem gaming, even as traditional consoles remain a central part of the gaming experience.

While he emphasized the big-screen, high-end titles aren’t disappearing, he noted a clear movement toward more open, PC-driven platforms that offer developers and players greater flexibility.

Importance: The move toward open PC ecosystem gaming signals a major shift, driving broader access, cross-platform play, and shaping the future of gaming.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick discusses the rise of open PC ecosystem gaming and the future of the industry

Rise Of Open PC Ecosystem Gaming

According to Zelnick, the next decade of gaming will be shaped by a move away from fully closed systems and toward open PC ecosystem gaming, where hardware boundaries blur and platform accessibility expands.

He highlighted that console and mobile currently share an almost equal market split, but mobile’s rapid growth—propelled by Take-Two’s massive Zynga acquisition—signals a broader shift in player habits.

    Console And PC Market Share

As companies like Microsoft hint at PC-based console hybrids and Valve pushes innovations like the Steam Machine, Zelnick believes the industry is gravitating toward open platforms and supporting richer experiences across devices.

He added that mobile remains the company’s fastest-growing segment, accounting for nearly half of Take-Two’s revenue last quarter, while console and PC collectively form the rest.

Consoles remain relevant, but the future of gaming is moving toward cross-platform and PC-driven experiences

With global mobile spending projected to rise again this year, he expects the trend to accelerate as more players embrace flexible, cross-platform ecosystems.
