GTA VI Brings Back Fog of War for Map Exploration

Grand Theft Auto VI is bringing back a fog-of-war system for its world map, with creators who attended Rockstar North’s recent hands-off preview saying unexplored parts of Leonida remain obscured until players travel through them.

The detail was reported by multiple creators who were invited to see GTA VI at Rockstar North ahead of the game’s Extended Look presentation.

Italian creator MikeShowSha described the map as using a fog-of-war system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, with new areas gradually revealed as the player explores the world.

TGG, who also attended Rockstar’s preview, separately discussed seeing GTA VI’s full map while much of it was still covered by fog of war.

That makes the mechanic considerably more credible than ordinary community speculation, although Rockstar has not published a standalone announcement specifically explaining how map discovery works.

    The basic idea is straightforward.

When starting a fresh game, players will not immediately see every road and geographic detail across Leonida’s map.

Instead, portions of the map remain hidden until Jason or Lucia travels through those areas, gradually revealing more of the state through normal exploration.

Rockstar has used similar systems before.

Grand Theft Auto V also concealed unexplored portions of Los Santos and Blaine County when beginning a new save, while Red Dead Redemption 2 used fog across its map that cleared as Arthur Morgan travelled through unfamiliar territory.

For GTA VI, the system appears to return alongside a substantially redesigned map interface.

Creators who saw the game at Rockstar North have described the pause-menu map as much more detailed than the one in GTA V, with satellite-style imagery and significantly greater visual information.

TGG also said he briefly saw the broader shape of the world beneath the fog during Rockstar’s demonstration.

That preview has contributed to continuing discussion about the actual geography of Leonida, although players should be cautious with precise map-size estimates until Rockstar publishes official measurements.

The fog-of-war mechanic is more concrete because it concerns something directly observed during the preview rather than a calculation based on screenshots or scale comparisons.

MikeShowSha’s preview also described a quicker navigation option that allows players to set a waypoint without opening the full map.

According to his account, a waypoint can be created directly during gameplay using a controller shortcut.

TGG has similarly discussed GTA VI offering multiple navigation options, including a minimap and other display configurations.

Those details suggest Rockstar is trying to make navigating Leonida more flexible while still encouraging players to discover the environment themselves.

Fog of war is particularly relevant for GTA VI because Rockstar is presenting exploration as a major part of the game.

The Extended Look showcased Vice City alongside beaches, wetlands, smaller communities, islands and rural parts of Leonida, while preview attendees have described a world containing significantly more activities and interactable locations outside the main city.

Keeping those locations hidden until players physically reach them gives Rockstar a way to preserve discovery even in a game whose map will inevitably be documented online shortly after release.

It also lets players visually track which parts of Leonida they have actually explored.

That may be especially useful in wilderness or coastal areas where roads and landmarks are less dense than in Vice City itself.

The system does not necessarily mean players will be prevented from travelling into unexplored areas.

Fog of war generally affects what information appears on the map rather than creating a physical barrier, and nothing from the preview reports suggests Leonida is divided into permanently locked map regions.

Rockstar has not yet explained whether story progression will restrict particular locations early in the game.

For now, the firsthand preview accounts provide the clearest indication yet that GTA VI will preserve one of Rockstar’s familiar exploration systems.

Players beginning a new save should expect Leonida’s map to reveal itself progressively rather than being fully exposed from the opening hours.
