Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, 4A Games has confirmed alongside the first console gameplay footage of the post-apocalyptic shooter. The new sequence debuted during Sony’s September 3 State of Play and was captured entirely on PlayStation 5 Pro. 4A Games also confirmed that both PS5 and PS5 Pro will offer a dedicated 60FPS Performance Mode with ray tracing enabled.

The footage follows Metro 2039’s new protagonist, known as The Stranger, shortly after he leaves the tunnels beneath Moscow and reaches the thawing ruins on the surface. The Stranger is a former Spartan warrior who previously abandoned the Metro and did not intend to return, but the new story forces him back into the underground society he left behind. 4A describes him as a highly capable but brutal survivor whose history will form a major part of the game’s narrative.

The gameplay sequence sees The Stranger searching for a Novoreich fortress inside a nearby dam. Radiation remains an immediate environmental threat, while ruined apartment buildings and other structures conceal enemies and hazards across the surface. 4A Games says Metro 2039 remains a solo, story-driven first-person shooter, with the new footage deliberately chosen to demonstrate both its combat and exploration inside densely constructed environments.

Several weapons and survival systems are shown during the sequence. The Stranger can charge a Shatun rifle for suppressed headshots, use Molotov cocktails to clear groups of enemies and fight at close range with a Duplet shotgun while navigating collapsing structures. Players will also need to monitor radiation and equipment, retaining the resource-management elements that have traditionally played a major role in the Metro series.

Metro 2039 is once again being built on 4A Games’ proprietary 4A Engine rather than a third-party technology such as Unreal Engine. The developer says it has built on lessons learned from Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, which brought 60FPS ray-traced rendering to consoles in 2021. For the new game, 4A has reworked its ray-tracing implementation with the goal of improving both image quality and performance.

That work will allow ray tracing to remain active in Metro 2039’s 60FPS Performance Mode on both the standard PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. The State of Play footage itself was recorded on PS5 Pro, although 4A has not yet provided a detailed comparison between the two Sony consoles or outlined additional Pro-specific visual enhancements. More information about the game’s technology and PlayStation features is expected closer to launch.

The February release date replaces the broader window previously attached to the game. Metro 2039 had already generated substantial early interest, reaching [[LINK|[https://www.techtroduce.com/metro-2039-wishlist-additions/|one million wishlist additions](https://www.techtroduce.com/metro-2039-wishlist-additions/|one million wishlist additions)]] within two weeks of its announcement. Players can continue to wishlist the game now, while 4A Games says pre-orders will open later in 2026.

Metro 2039 was first unveiled in April as the fourth mainline entry in the series and takes place six years after the original Metro 2033. Unlike Metro Exodus, which sent players far beyond Moscow, the new game returns its focus to the city’s tunnels and surrounding ruins. The story is being written in collaboration with Metro author Dmitry Glukhovsky and centers on a Metro now controlled by the authoritarian Novoreich faction under Hunter.

The September gameplay reveal formed part of the [[LINK|[https://www.techtroduce.com/playstation-state-of-play-september-3-2026/|two State of Play broadcasts scheduled for September 3](https://www.techtroduce.com/playstation-state-of-play-september-3-2026/|two State of Play broadcasts scheduled for September 3)]], giving 4A Games a platform to show the title running on console for the first time. The developer says more details about the story, gameplay systems and technology will be revealed in the months ahead.

Metro 2039 launches on February 4, 2027, in most territories for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. 4A Games notes that the release falls on February 5 in some regions, including Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. With the date now locked in and 60FPS ray-traced console gameplay confirmed, the next major questions concern the differences between its graphical modes and how extensively The Stranger’s new abilities change the familiar Metro formula.
