A new Killzone project is reportedly in very early development, potentially bringing Sony’s dormant first-person shooter series back after more than a decade. According to a new report from MP1st, Guerrilla Games is working with an external studio on what sources described as either a remake or remaster. Sony and Guerrilla have not announced the project, and the report does not identify which Killzone game is being revisited.
MP1st says the project involves a studio outside PlayStation’s first-party network, with Guerrilla also contributing to development. The publication was not able to confirm whether the game is technically a remake or a remaster, and it cautioned that the project remains at such an early stage that plans could still change. Although the original 2004 Killzone would be an obvious candidate for modernization, the report does not identify it as the game being worked on.
The alleged project also appears to be connected to Guerrilla’s wider development schedule. MP1st reports that Killzone was originally expected to become one of the studio’s next areas of focus after Horizon Hunters Gathering, Guerrilla’s cooperative Horizon game. Some developers had reportedly already been allocated to the Killzone project, but the situation changed after Hunters Gathering entered a substantial rework following negative feedback from private testing.

That overhaul was separately reported in August, when Bloomberg said Guerrilla had been reworking Horizon Hunters Gathering since June. The plan reportedly shifted away from its original live-service structure toward a smaller, more traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story component. Guerrilla officially announced Hunters Gathering in February 2026 as a three-player co-op action game, drawing directly on the studio’s previous multiplayer experience with Killzone.
MP1st says stabilizing and reshaping Hunters Gathering is now Guerrilla’s immediate priority. Once that work is further along, part of the studio could reportedly pivot back toward the Killzone project. The report also claims Guerrilla’s next mainline Horizon game is currently expected to follow the Killzone release, although the publication stresses that development priorities could change because all of these projects remain relatively far from completion.
That makes the reported Killzone revival particularly notable given how long the series has been inactive. Guerrilla’s official game catalogue still lists the original Killzone, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, Killzone: Liberation and Killzone: Shadow Fall among its past releases, alongside the Vita title Killzone: Mercenary. Shadow Fall launched with the PlayStation 4 in 2013 and remains the most recent home-console entry, while Guerrilla subsequently shifted its primary focus to Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequels.
Killzone was once one of PlayStation’s most prominent first-party shooter franchises. The series began on PlayStation 2 in 2004 and later became closely associated with Sony’s technical showcases on PS3 and PS4, particularly through Killzone 2 and Shadow Fall. Its absence has become increasingly noticeable as PlayStation’s first-party portfolio has moved toward action-adventure titles and, more recently, selected multiplayer projects.
A remake or remaster would also offer Sony a lower-risk route to testing renewed interest in Killzone without immediately committing to a completely new entry. Other PlayStation franchises have returned through remasters and remakes before receiving broader attention, while updated versions can also make older games accessible on current hardware. Exactly how extensive this project might be cannot be determined until the reported remake-versus-remaster question is resolved.
For now, the entire project should be treated as unconfirmed. Neither Sony Interactive Entertainment nor Guerrilla Games has publicly said that Killzone is returning, and MP1st’s report makes clear that development is still in its earliest stages. If the information is accurate, however, it would mark the strongest indication in years that PlayStation is actively preparing to revive one of Guerrilla’s pre-Horizon franchises.
