StarCraft Shooter Reportedly Has a Single-Player Story Campaign

Blizzard’s unannounced StarCraft shooter is reportedly being built around a single-player, story-driven experience. Windows Central’s Jez Corden said during a recent podcast discussion that he has it on “good authority” that the project is a “single player story kind of game.” Blizzard has not announced the shooter or confirmed its structure, so the claim remains unofficial despite adding a significant new detail to a project that has been reported for nearly two years.

The existence of a new StarCraft shooter was first reported in 2024 by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who said a small Blizzard team was incubating the project under Dan Hay. Hay previously worked on Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise before joining Blizzard, and development reportedly continued after Blizzard cancelled an unrelated survival game. Windows Central has since reported additional signs that the project remains active, including experienced developers joining the team and hiring activity connected to an unannounced AAA shooter.

Corden’s latest comments narrow down what Blizzard may actually be building. Until now, speculation has ranged from a campaign-focused shooter to a multiplayer or live-service experience influenced by games such as Helldivers 2. Describing it specifically as a single-player story game suggests narrative content is a central part of the project, although Corden did not say it is single-player only or rule out separate co-op or multiplayer components.

That distinction matters because Blizzard’s recent catalogue has increasingly emphasized persistent online games. Diablo IV, Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft are all designed around ongoing multiplayer engagement, while the company abandoned the larger PvE campaign originally planned for Overwatch 2. A substantial StarCraft single-player campaign would therefore represent a notable use of one of Blizzard’s established franchises outside its current live-service-heavy portfolio.

The reported shooter also appears to be separate from other possible StarCraft projects. Corden recently claimed that Blizzard is working with an external Western studio on an unannounced strategy project, although he did not identify the franchise involved. Separate reports have also linked Nexon to discussions around licensing StarCraft, creating the possibility that Blizzard could have several different projects connected to the series in development at the same time.

StarCraft has attempted the transition from strategy game to shooter before. Blizzard announced StarCraft: Ghost in 2002 as a third-person action game starring Nova, but the project went through multiple developers before being placed on indefinite hold and ultimately cancelled. Another shooter, internally known as Ares, was reportedly developed years later before Blizzard cancelled it in 2019, making the current project at least the company’s third known attempt to build a shooter in the StarCraft universe.

The timing of Corden’s comments is particularly notable with BlizzCon 2026 beginning on September 12. Blizzard has confirmed that its opening ceremony will feature major announcements, while StarCraft has been given visible placement around the event through the returning Blizzard Arcade and free StarCraft II rewards. The official StarCraft website has also recently displayed unusual glitch effects and cryptic messages, although Blizzard has not publicly connected those teasers to the reported shooter.

Corden previously said he expects the StarCraft shooter to be revealed at BlizzCon 2026, but that expectation remains an insider claim rather than a confirmed part of Blizzard’s published schedule. Blizzard’s current event information does not announce a dedicated panel for a new StarCraft game, and programming can change after the opening ceremony. If the project does appear, the show could finally establish its perspective, platforms, campaign structure and release window.

For now, the most significant new detail is that the reported shooter may not be primarily designed as another multiplayer-first Blizzard title. Corden’s information points instead toward a narrative-focused single-player experience, potentially giving StarCraft its first major new story-driven game in years. Confirmation may be close with BlizzCon only days away, but until Blizzard makes an announcement, both the game’s structure and its eventual release remain unconfirmed.
