Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed one million units sold worldwide on its first day of release, Capcom has announced. The milestone comes just days after the action game launched on September 4, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its performance has also pushed lifetime sales for the wider Onimusha series beyond 10 million units.
Capcom confirmed the figures through an official investor relations announcement on September 7. Before Way of the Sword launched, cumulative Onimusha sales stood at more than 9.1 million units as of March 31, 2026. Adding the new game’s opening performance has now carried the franchise across the eight-figure threshold, giving Capcom a substantial commercial result from a series that had gone more than two decades without an entirely new main entry.
Way of the Sword represents the first new Onimusha title in over 20 years, with Capcom positioning it as part of an effort to reactivate properties that have not received major releases in some time. The game is set in an Edo-era Kyoto distorted by supernatural Malice and follows Miyamoto Musashi as he battles the demonic Genma using an Oni Gauntlet. Its combat and mastery systems build around swordplay mechanics including parries, deflects, Issen attacks, Blade Locks and Reflex Dodges.

The launch also followed a late change to Capcom’s original release schedule. Way of the Sword had previously been planned for September 25 before the publisher moved the date forward to September 4 in July. Capcom said at the time that feedback and support surrounding the playable demo contributed to its decision to bring the full game to players earlier.
Selling more than one million units on day one puts the revival among Capcom’s stronger recent launches, although direct comparisons require some caution because the company reports different milestones over different periods. New IP Pragmata, for example, reached one million units in two days earlier this year before passing two million after 16 days. The speed of Way of the Sword’s opening is therefore particularly notable for a franchise returning after such a long absence.
The result also compares favorably with other recent Japanese releases that reached the same broad milestone. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater reached one million sales following its own launch, illustrating how significant the million-unit threshold remains for major revivals of established Japanese franchises. Way of the Sword has achieved that mark within its first day on sale.
Capcom had been building momentum for the game in the weeks immediately before release. Onimusha: Way of the Sword won two awards at the Gamescom Awards 2026, where Capcom said it received recognition for its gameplay experience. Those awards arrived shortly before launch and gave the long-dormant series additional visibility heading into September.
The commercial result strengthens Capcom’s broader strategy of reviving older intellectual properties alongside its established annual slate. The company has explicitly said it wants to make greater use of its back catalogue rather than relying only on its most consistently active franchises. Onimusha’s return now provides an early indication that at least one of those dormant properties can still attract a large modern audience.
Capcom has not yet provided a platform-by-platform breakdown for the first-day sales, so it is unclear how the million-plus units were divided between PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Digital and physical sales were also not separated in the announcement. Further figures will likely provide a clearer picture of how strongly Way of the Sword holds after its initial launch period.
For now, the confirmed milestone gives Onimusha one of its most important commercial updates in years. Way of the Sword sold more than one million units worldwide on September 4 alone, while total franchise sales have now surpassed 10 million copies.
