Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia and Malaysian developer Metronomik have officially unveiled Ondeh Ondeh: Kaya’s Tasty Tale, a rhythm-driven puzzle action-adventure launching in 2027. The game was shown during Nintendo’s September 9 Direct, confirming a Nintendo Switch 2 version, while the broader announcement also lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. A more specific release date has not yet been announced.

Kaya’s Tasty Tale follows Kaya, a young protagonist working toward becoming a Worldbuilder in the magical world of Selera. The setting draws heavily from Southeast Asian culture, with the reveal emphasizing colorful environments, food-inspired imagery and regional influences rather than presenting those elements as background decoration. Metronomik describes the game as a coming-of-age story centered on family, courage and self-discovery.

Rhythm is integrated directly into exploration and puzzle solving rather than existing solely as a separate music-game mechanic. Players will listen to the world around them and use the power of the Ondeh to interact with environments, solve puzzles and overcome enemies. Kaya also carries a large spoon that appears to function as both a tool and weapon during encounters, reinforcing the game’s mixture of culinary imagery and action-adventure systems.

The 2027 reveal represents a major step forward for a project Metronomik first teased years ago. Ondeh Ondeh was originally announced in 2021 as the studio’s second game following No Straight Roads, with Metronomik describing it at the time as another audio-focused experience but one built around a very different structure. The developer also said it intended to lean much more heavily into Malaysian culture after the positive response to the regional influences found in No Straight Roads.

That original concept has now developed into Kaya’s Tasty Tale, with a named protagonist, a defined setting and a clearer gameplay structure. The title itself comes from ondeh-ondeh, the Southeast Asian dessert typically made with glutinous rice flour, palm sugar and grated coconut. Metronomik’s use of the name was established from the project’s earliest announcement and fits the food-inspired visual language now seen throughout the finished concept.

The reveal also marks a significant publishing partnership for Metronomik. Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia is publishing the game, giving the Kuala Lumpur-based studio considerably broader distribution than it had when the project was first introduced independently. The multi-platform release also positions Kaya’s Tasty Tale for a wider audience than the early teasers, which had only referred generally to next-generation platforms without a finalized launch lineup.

Metronomik is best known for No Straight Roads, its 2020 rhythm-action game built around a conflict between rock musicians and an electronic music empire. That game established the studio’s interest in connecting sound directly with gameplay mechanics, an approach that continues in Ondeh Ondeh even though the new title appears structurally very different. Instead of musical boss battles forming the entire identity of the game, Kaya’s Tasty Tale uses rhythm across exploration, environmental interaction, puzzles and combat.

Nintendo’s presentation showed a colorful 3D world with several distinct environments and whimsical enemies. The footage suggests that traversal and puzzle solving will be just as important as direct combat, with Kaya moving through spaces built around musical interactions and environmental timing. Bandai Namco and Metronomik have not yet provided a full explanation of progression systems, ability upgrades or the overall scale of Selera.

Several other details also remain unconfirmed. The developers have not announced the game’s exact 2027 release date, pricing, performance targets on each platform or whether there will be any platform-specific features. The reveal instead focuses primarily on establishing Kaya, Selera and the central rhythm-driven mechanics after years of limited information about the project.

Ondeh Ondeh: Kaya’s Tasty Tale is scheduled for release in 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. For Metronomik, the announcement turns a project first teased in 2021 into a fully defined adventure built around Southeast Asian culture, musical interaction and the studio’s distinctive approach to rhythm-based gameplay.
