EA and Hazelight Studios have officially announced It Takes Two for Nintendo Switch 2, with the co-op adventure launching on October 15, 2026 in most regions. The new version was unveiled during Nintendo’s September 9 Direct and includes significant visual and performance improvements over the original Switch release. Existing Nintendo Switch owners will also be eligible for a free Switch 2 upgrade in supported territories.
The most substantial technical improvement is performance. EA confirms that It Takes Two will run at 1080p and 60 FPS while Switch 2 is docked, including when connected to a 4K television or monitor. The new version also uses higher-resolution textures, a significantly improved lighting system and enhanced visual effects, while quicker loading times are intended to make transitions between levels smoother.
Cross-play is another major addition. Switch 2 players will be able to play online with friends on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through the game’s Friend’s Pass system. Only one participant needs to own the full game, while the second player can install the free Friend’s Pass and join their partner for the complete adventure on a supported platform.

That represents a notable change from the original Nintendo Switch version, which could not play online with users on other platforms. Switch 2 will additionally support GameShare for local play with Nintendo Switch users, giving players another option beyond conventional split-screen and online co-op. Hazelight has consistently designed its games around two-player collaboration, with Friend’s Pass also forming an important part of the studio’s newer Switch 2 title Split Fiction.
Owners of It Takes Two on the original Switch can upgrade to the Switch 2 version without paying again in most supported regions. EA says the offer requires the game to be owned on the same Nintendo Account used on Switch 2, along with internet access and access to the Nintendo eShop. The free-upgrade offer is not available in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong or Taiwan, while regional terms can otherwise vary.
It Takes Two originally launched in March 2021 and follows Cody and May, a married couple preparing for divorce who are magically transformed into dolls after their daughter Rose becomes distressed by their separation. The pair are forced to cooperate through an increasingly surreal series of environments while Dr. Hakim, an animated relationship self-help book, attempts to repair their marriage. Every major gameplay sequence is designed around two-player cooperation, with new mechanics regularly replacing those introduced in previous levels.
The game became one of Hazelight’s biggest successes and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021. Its design moves between platforming, shooting, puzzle solving, vehicle sections and other temporary mechanics rather than relying on one fixed combat or traversal system. The original Nintendo Switch port arrived in November 2022, bringing the full campaign to Nintendo hardware but with substantially tighter technical constraints than the versions available elsewhere.
Switch 2 gives Hazelight and porting partner Turn Me Up Games considerably more headroom to improve that presentation. The combination of 60 FPS docked performance, upgraded lighting, higher-resolution assets and cross-platform multiplayer makes this more than a straightforward compatibility release. It also continues the growing flow of established third-party games receiving dedicated versions for Nintendo’s newer hardware, with Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 arriving on Switch 2 just one day later.
EA has priced It Takes Two for Switch 2 at $39.99 in the United States. The October 15 date applies to most regions, while Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea will receive the game on October 16 because of regional time-zone differences.
It Takes Two launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 15, 2026 with 1080p 60 FPS docked gameplay, upgraded visuals, faster loading, cross-play, Friend’s Pass and GameShare support. Existing Switch owners in eligible territories can upgrade to the new version for free.
