The First Zombie has been announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, putting players on the opposite side of the usual zombie apocalypse. Instead of surviving an outbreak or eliminating the undead, players control humanity’s first zombie and spread the infection across Tokyo by turning people into new members of their growing horde. A release date has not yet been announced.

The game describes itself as a “reverse” zombie experience built around multiplying the undead rather than destroying them. Players begin alone and gradually “make friends” with humans by infecting them, building an increasingly large zombie population as they move through the city. The central objective is ultimately to transform Tokyo itself into a city of zombies.

The PC version has already appeared through Steam’s backend, where The First Zombie is listed as a single-player action and casual game with real-time tactics and life-simulation elements. Its Steam data also points to a deliberately lighter visual direction than many zombie games, with cartoon and comedy tags appearing alongside violence, gore and dark comedy. English and Japanese interface and subtitle support are currently listed.

That combination gives The First Zombie a noticeably different tone from traditional survival horror. The player is not managing scarce ammunition or trying to escape an overwhelming horde; the horde is effectively the player’s resource. Every successful infection expands the group and should make it possible to overwhelm increasingly difficult groups of humans as the outbreak spreads.

Early promotional material shows the game leaning into the absurdity of its premise rather than treating the infection as straightforward horror. Crowds of zombies can gather behind the player character while civilians attempt to escape, turning what would normally be the threat in a zombie game into the core progression system. The developers are positioning the process of converting humans almost as recruitment, using playful language around making new “friends.”

The announcement also identifies Tokyo as the setting, giving the infection a defined city to consume rather than using a generic apocalypse backdrop. The available description suggests progression will revolve around increasing the size of the undead population and pushing the outbreak further across the city. Exactly how open the map will be, whether individual areas unlock sequentially and how much direct control players have over their followers have not yet been fully detailed.

Steam currently categorizes the game with real-time tactics, which suggests the growing zombie crowd will involve more than simply following the player automatically. However, the developers have not yet published a complete breakdown of commands, upgrades or horde-management systems. Combat structure, mission variety and any progression outside individual stages also remain unclear from the material released so far.

The First Zombie’s reveal comes alongside a new promotional trailer prepared around Tokyo Game Show 2026. Steam’s backend shows the trailer being added on September 16, immediately before the event begins, making the announcement part of the wider wave of Japanese game reveals surrounding this year’s show. The game does not currently have a listed release year on Steam.

No PlayStation or Xbox versions have been announced. The currently confirmed platforms are Nintendo Switch and PC, with the PC release planned for Steam. It is also not yet clear whether the Switch version will launch simultaneously with PC or whether one platform will arrive first.

The First Zombie joins a relatively small group of games that reverse the usual zombie-game power dynamic by making the infected side playable, but its emphasis on steadily converting Tokyo gives it a clear identity. Rather than asking how long humanity can survive an outbreak, the game starts from a much simpler objective: become the first zombie, create more zombies and keep spreading until there are no humans left to run.
