505 Games and ArtPlay have released a new gameplay trailer for Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast. The footage provides an extended look at protagonists Leo and Alex fighting through the game’s gothic 2.5D environments, while highlighting the dual-character combat systems that distinguish the upcoming title from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The Scarlet Engagement is currently scheduled to launch in 2027.
The new trailer shows both protagonists being used during exploration and combat rather than limiting players to a single lead character. ArtPlay calls this its Buddy System, allowing Leo and Alex to work together while dealing with enemies, traps and environmental obstacles. The footage shows the pair rapidly switching roles during encounters as they move through the game’s sprawling environments.
Leo, formally named Leonard Brandon, is a young fighter from the Church’s Black Wolves, while Alexander Kyteler is a knight belonging to the Kingdom’s White Stags. The pair are brought together after previous attempts to confront the forces occupying the mysterious Ethereal Castle have failed. Their objective is to defeat Demon Lord Elias, whose castle and demonic forces have placed the surrounding kingdom under threat.

Combat remains rooted in the exploration-focused side-scrolling structure associated with Bloodstained, but The Scarlet Engagement introduces several new systems. One of the most prominent is the Epiphany Combat System, through which players can discover additional moves and powerful attacks as they fight. The new footage emphasizes faster combat sequences against both smaller enemies and considerably larger monsters while showcasing how the two protagonists can contribute to encounters.
The game is also being designed around what ArtPlay describes as the largest map in Bloodstained history. Its environments span a cursed version of 16th-century England and include a dynamic passage of time covering dawn, daytime, dusk and night. Those changes are intended to affect more than the scenery, with the time of day also influencing how players interact with parts of the world.
Customization extends beyond combat abilities. Players will be able to equip armor that visibly changes each hero’s appearance, while crafting and cooking systems provide additional ways to strengthen the pair. The trailer shows a mixture of interior castle areas and outdoor environments, reinforcing ArtPlay’s plans for a broader world than the interconnected castle that formed the core of Ritual of the Night.
The Scarlet Engagement is set earlier in the Bloodstained timeline and is designed as an entry point that does not require prior knowledge of the series. At the same time, ArtPlay says existing fans will encounter connections to the wider Bloodstained universe. The project is being produced by Koji Igarashi, who also led Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night after a long career working on exploration-focused Castlevania titles.
The game was originally announced with a 2026 release window before ArtPlay moved it into 2027 in August. Igarashi said at the time that development had entered its final stages but that the team needed additional time before release. ArtPlay also promised that more gameplay would be shown following the delay, making the Tokyo Game Show trailer one of the first substantial looks at the project since that schedule change.
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is currently announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Official Xbox materials also list the game for Xbox Game Pass. No exact 2027 release date has been announced yet.
The new TGS footage therefore serves primarily as a closer demonstration of how ArtPlay is expanding the Bloodstained formula around two simultaneous protagonists. Between the Buddy System, Epiphany abilities, larger map, day-night cycle and expanded customization, The Scarlet Engagement is being positioned as a broader follow-up to Ritual of the Night rather than a straightforward repeat of its structure.
