Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has set a new Steam record for the series, reaching 52,694 concurrent players shortly after launch. SteamDB recorded the peak on October 3, one day after the game’s full October 2 release, putting the latest entry far ahead of every previous Ace Combat game tracked on the platform. Bandai Namco has not announced overall sales figures, so the milestone currently reflects Steam activity rather than the game’s total audience across all platforms.
The scale of the increase is substantial compared with Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. SteamDB lists Ace Combat 7’s all-time peak at 13,758 concurrent players, reached in February 2019, meaning Wings of Theve attracted almost four times as many simultaneous Steam users at its peak. Ace Combat Assault Horizon’s Enhanced Edition reached only 3,795 concurrent players, making Ace Combat 8’s launch an even larger jump over the franchise’s earlier PC presence.
Wings of Theve launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, with Deluxe Edition owners receiving three days of early access beginning September 29. Bandai Namco describes it as the first mainline Ace Combat entry in seven years, developed by Bandai Namco Aces using Unreal Engine 5 alongside the studio’s proprietary Cloudly technology. The game combines a new campaign with what the publisher calls the largest multiplayer offering in series history, including cross-platform play.

The campaign follows a pilot who assumes the symbolic identity “Wings of Theve” after the Federation of Central Usea is overwhelmed by an invasion from the Republic of Sotoa. Players operate from the aging aircraft carrier Endurance while attempting to reclaim occupied territory alongside three squadmates. Bandai Namco has also expanded the mission structure, including the return of Annihilation Battle, which revolves around large-scale objectives, destructible facilities and supply lines.
Multiplayer has also grown considerably from Ace Combat 7. Wings of Theve includes cross-platform matchmaking and an interactive Air Base lobby, alongside modes such as Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare. Co-Op Assault has teams competing for scores against AI-controlled enemies, while Co-Op Warfare mixes opposing player teams with NPC units in a PvPvE structure.
The strong player count has arrived alongside a more mixed response from Steam users. Steam currently categorizes Ace Combat 8’s English-language reviews as Mostly Positive, with roughly 78% of several thousand reviews recommending the game. That is notably below Ace Combat 7’s long-term Steam reception, which remains Very Positive with an approval rate above 85%.
Some of the early criticism has focused on performance and the handling of the Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War pre-order bonus. On PC, the bonus is implemented as DLC tied to Ace Combat 8 rather than a completely separate Steam application, which led to confusion among players expecting a standalone release. Bandai Namco has attributed that implementation to licensing restrictions, while the main game itself also carries Denuvo Anti-Tamper and Easy Anti-Cheat.
Those complaints have not prevented Ace Combat 8 from establishing the franchise’s strongest Steam launch by a wide margin. The 52,694-player peak is nearly quadruple Ace Combat 7’s record and more than thirteen times the peak reached by Assault Horizon’s PC version. With Bandai Namco yet to disclose console sales or combined launch figures, Steam provides only part of the picture, but it already shows that Wings of Theve has attracted a much larger simultaneous PC audience than any previous Ace Combat release.
