The Ninja Gaiden series is off to an explosive start in 2025, branded as the “Year of the Ninja” by Koei Tecmo. As part of this monumental year, Xbox unveiled major titles during its Developer Direct showcase, including the reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4, a collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames.

Additionally, a remastered version of the classic Ninja Gaiden 2 Black was shadow-dropped, exciting fans but also sparking complaints due to its significantly larger file size.

The surprise release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black marked a highlight of the showcase. As the fourth iteration of Ninja Gaiden 2, the remaster boasts modern graphical enhancements and higher performance on current-gen consoles. However, these improvements come at a cost: the game’s file size clocks in at a hefty 86 GB.

This figure dwarfs the 7 GB size of the original 2008 Xbox 360 release and even the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection—which includes three Sigma games—totaling only 14 GB.

At just 10 GB less than the sprawling PS5 exclusive Rise of the Ronin and comparable to 2020’s Nioh 2, the file size has sparked a conversation among fans about potential optimization issues or the limitations of Unreal Engine 5.

Despite offering the most visually impressive iteration of the game yet, the large file size feels excessive for a linear action game. This concern has many hoping for a future patch to trim down the storage demand.

While Ninja Gaiden 2 Black headlines the start of 2025, it is just one piece of the puzzle. The “Year of the Ninja” will also include Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, a 2D action sidescroller crafted by Blasphemous developer The Game Kitchen. The title is expected to launch later this year, offering a new take on the franchise’s fast-paced combat in a different style.

Meanwhile, Ninja Gaiden 4 is on track for a fall release and has generated immense buzz as the first new mainline entry in the series in over a decade. This ambitious project sees Team Ninja joined by PlatinumGames, signaling a potentially transformative moment for the franchise.

As fans dive into Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, concerns about file sizes and storage limitations raise questions about what to expect from Ninja Gaiden 4. If a remaster demands such resources, an all-new entry may push the boundaries even further.

Nevertheless, Koei Tecmo’s focus on the Ninja Gaiden IP, combined with diverse offerings in both remasters and new experiences, promises an unprecedented year for fans of the legendary action series. Whether through console optimization or compelling gameplay, Ninja Gaiden’s return aims to solidify its place as a major player in the modern gaming landscape.
