Microsoft has reported a 2% year-over-year decline in Xbox content and services revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, continuing a challenging period for its gaming business. The figures were published on October 28, 2026, as part of the company’s financial results for the three months ending September 30.
Total Xbox revenue reached $5.38 billion during the quarter, compared with $5.51 billion in the corresponding period last year. That represents a decline of approximately 2.3%, despite Microsoft’s overall revenue increasing 19% to $92.3 billion.
The Xbox content and services category, which includes revenue associated with Xbox Game Pass, game sales and other digital services, declined 2% on a reported basis and 1% in constant currency. Microsoft did not provide a separate Game Pass subscriber count or subscription revenue growth figure in its earnings announcement.

Consequently, the decline in Xbox content and services revenue does not independently establish that Game Pass subscriptions are falling. Changes in game sales, downloadable content and subscription spending can all influence the broader category’s performance.
Microsoft’s latest results follow a difficult fiscal 2026 for Xbox hardware. In its annual financial report, the company disclosed that Xbox hardware revenue declined 29% for the full fiscal year, primarily because of lower console sales volumes. The same report showed Xbox content and services revenue falling 5% for the year, although growth in Game Pass partially offset weaker content performance.
The latest quarterly earnings release does not separately establish the reported 14% decline in Xbox hardware revenue. Microsoft disclosed the overall Xbox revenue figure and the content and services percentage change, but a specific hardware decline of 14% cannot be confirmed from those figures alone.
The results also arrive amid broader concerns about console demand. US market data through August showed Xbox sales declining alongside rising console prices, highlighting the pressure facing traditional gaming hardware.
Microsoft continues to support its subscription ecosystem with new releases, including the October 2026 Game Pass lineup, which includes Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and additional titles across supported platforms.
However, the latest financial reporting covers July through September and therefore excludes the October launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and its subsequent impact on Microsoft’s gaming business.
At the company level, Microsoft reported operating income of $45.9 billion, an increase of 21%, while net income rose 32% to $36.6 billion. Its Devices and Consumer segment, which includes Xbox alongside other consumer products and services, generated $15.5 billion in revenue, down 3% year over year.
The quarterly results confirm that Xbox revenue remains under pressure even as Microsoft’s wider business expands. A clearer assessment of Game Pass subscriber performance and the latest Xbox hardware sales trend will require additional disclosures beyond the figures included in the initial earnings announcement.
