Voltage has officially announced Kakan Ruirui: The Caged Lantern of Yomi, a new Japanese-inspired dark fantasy otome adventure coming to Nintendo Switch in 2027. Developed in collaboration with Toei Animation under Voltage’s AmuLit console gaming label, the title will launch digitally with Japanese and English language support.
The announcement was made on November 2, 2026, confirming the game’s creative team and plans for its first promotional video. The project features illustrations by Yone Kazuki, best known for her work on the Hakuoki series, alongside a development team involving HYDE.
Kakan Ruirui, officially titled Kakan Ruirui: Urayomi Terasu Hoozukiyo in Japanese, is described as an original adventure set in a beautiful but haunting Japanese-style fantasy world. Its central premise is introduced through the tagline, “It all begins with a life lost.”

Voltage has not yet revealed a detailed story synopsis, playable characters, romance routes or gameplay systems. However, the publisher has confirmed that the narrative will emphasize dramatic storytelling within its dark fantasy setting.
The project brings together several creators with experience in Japanese adventure games. Ririka Yoshimura, whose previous writing credits include Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost and Cupid Parasite, is responsible for the scenario and will co-direct the game alongside Voltage’s Rei Misaki.
Yone Kazuki will handle illustrations, while Naohiro Yuki is responsible for background artwork. Yamato of Heart Company will compose the background music, and Arika will perform the theme song. HYDE’s Norihisa Kochiwa is credited as development producer, with Voltage overseeing planning and sharing production responsibilities with Toei Animation.
The collaboration builds on Voltage’s existing AmuLit catalogue, which includes even if TEMPEST, Red Bell’s Lament, Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost and sins of KALEIDO. Like several of those releases, Kakan Ruirui combines an original narrative with a darker fantasy setting aimed at otome adventure fans.
The game’s first teaser video will debut at the AmuLit booth during Animate Girls Festival 2026, taking place November 7–8 at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The event will also feature a special booklet containing character information and a promotional shopping bag displaying the game’s characters. Both items will be available in limited quantities each day.
A separate character reveal is scheduled for November 7 through the game’s official social media account, giving players their first look at the main cast following the initial announcement.
Kakan Ruirui is currently confirmed for the original Nintendo Switch as a download-only release. Voltage has not announced an exact launch date within 2027, pricing or additional platforms. English language support is already confirmed, meaning international players will not need to wait for a separately announced localization.
