In an era where digital distribution continues to reshape the gaming industry, the way players purchase and engage with new releases is evolving rapidly. Physical game sales, once the dominant metric of success, are now just one piece of a much larger puzzle.

Death Stranding 2 launched exclusively on PS5 on June 26, 2025, continuing the enigmatic journey of Sam Porter Bridges with more action. As major titles continue to launch in this shifting landscape, some surprising trends are beginning to emerge—especially in the UK market.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has launched to mixed commercial signals in the UK, with its physical sales reported to be down by a staggering 66% compared to its 2019 predecessor. Despite this sharp drop, the game still managed to secure No. 1 spot on the Uk physical charts.

Importance: The sharp decline in Death Stranding 2 UK physical sales signal a major shift in the gaming industry toward digital distribution. It highlights changing consumer habits and the decreasing importance of physical copies, urging publishers to prioritize digital strategies to succeed in today’s market.

Death Stranding 2 Trails Behind Astro Bot In UK Physical Sales

As hinted by gaming industry journalist Christopher Dring, Death Stranding 2’s UK physical launch sales were not only significantly lower than the original title but also trailed 33% behind last year’s Astro Bot, a game known for its strong physical presence.

However, it’s important to note that the current gaming climate has changed drastically. In 2024, physical game sale made up just 4% of all video game spending in the UK, making comparisons with the older releases increasingly misleading.

Deluxe Edition Boosts Digital Sales For Death Stranding 2

Additionally, Death Stranding 2’s Deluxe Edition—available only digitally—may have further skewed physical sales figures. Digital rankings, meanwhile, suggest a strong performance, with the title sitting just behind EA Sports FC 25 on the UK PlayStation Store’s best-sellers list.

Death Stranding 2 launch highlights the growing dominance of digital sales in gaming. How do you prefer to buy your games—physical or digital? Share your thoughts!
