As modern PC games continue to grow in size, storage has become a real concern for many players juggling multiple titles. Developers are constantly searching for ways to optimize performance without demanding massive amounts of hard drive space.

Helldivers 2, one of 2025’s most active live-service shooters, is now taking steps that could significantly improve the experience for players who are running low on storage.

Helldivers 2 players on PC just received a major surprise, as the developers have introduced a dramatic Helldivers 2 size reduction through a new technical public beta update. The studio announced that the game’s installation footprint has been massively trimmed.

This takes the PC version far closer to the lighter console build while maintaining performance expectations.

Importance: The Helldivers 2 size reduction frees up huge PC storage, improves accessibility, and sets a standard for optimizing large games without hurting performance.

Steam beta introduces Helldivers 2 size reduction with minimal load-time impact

    Full Asset De-Duplication

According to the developers, this impressive Helldivers 2 size reduction was achieved by fully de-duplicating game asset data, cutting the installation size from roughly 154 GB down to about 23 GB, saving an incredible 131 GB of storage.

The team revealed that the original oversized build existed because assets were duplicated to speed up loading on mechanical HDDs, which only around 11 percent of players still use. After analyzing performance, the studio realized load times were primarily affected by level generation rather than asset loading.

    Default Installation Coming Soon

This means that the duplicated data wasn’t providing meaningful benefits, as a result, the new “slim” version—now available through the Steam technical public beta—delivers the same gameplay experience with only minimal load-time differences and will eventually become the default installation once testing is complete.
