Grand Theft Auto VI will let players seamlessly switch between Jason and Lucia during gameplay, with Rockstar confirming that the two protagonists can operate together or head off independently across Leonida.
The mechanic was detailed by Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson in a new interview published ahead of GTA VI: An Extended Look, and the feature is also demonstrated during Rockstar’s latest gameplay presentation.
Players will not simply alternate between Jason and Lucia at predetermined points in the story. Rockstar says the pair can be controlled independently, while missions can also allow players to move between them as events unfold.
One example involves Jason and Lucia travelling together before a job. Players can control the character driving the vehicle, then switch to the other protagonist sitting in the passenger seat, where they can perform other actions such as looking through the in-game phone and social media.
Rockstar has also confirmed that players can swap between Jason and Lucia during missions, giving the dual-protagonist setup a more direct gameplay role than simply choosing which character to use while exploring the open world.
The system builds on the character-switching mechanic introduced in Grand Theft Auto V, which allowed players to move between Michael, Franklin and Trevor both in free roam and at specific points during missions. GTA VI appears to take the idea further by designing Jason and Lucia’s partnership around situations where both characters can actively participate together.
Their relationship is central to the game’s story. Rockstar has described Jason as a former member of the military who became involved with local drug runners, while Lucia is a fighter who has recently been released from prison. The two become caught up in a wider criminal conspiracy after a job goes wrong.
Rockstar says players will be able to experience that relationship while still having considerable freedom over how the two characters spend their time. Jason and Lucia can operate as a couple, but players can also take either character out separately and explore Leonida on their own.
That freedom extends beyond character switching. Rockstar has confirmed a number of systems intended to make the protagonists and world react more dynamically to player behavior, including physical changes caused by exercise, diet and lifestyle.
The Extended Look itself provides a broader view of the activities available around Vice City and the surrounding state. The footage includes driving, police pursuits, workouts, outdoor activities and exploration across both urban and natural areas, including sequences involving the water around Leonida.
Rockstar has placed significant emphasis on making the world feel more interactive than previous Grand Theft Auto games. Developers have said player actions can influence how people respond, while NPCs have been designed with greater variation in appearance and behavior.
Character switching could be particularly important within that larger system because Jason and Lucia are not designed as interchangeable avatars. Rockstar says each has a defined personality and story, even while players are given more control over how they behave and develop.
The studio’s goal is to provide freedom without removing the identity of either protagonist, meaning switching characters is intended to support the story as well as provide additional gameplay options.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.
With the Extended Look now providing the first substantial official gameplay demonstration, the ability to seamlessly move between Jason and Lucia is one of the clearest examples so far of how GTA VI is expanding on systems introduced in Grand Theft Auto V.
