A previously unknown Scream multiplayer game prototype developed by Fatshark has surfaced through the massive Steam archive leak that appeared in August 2026. Dataminer fellarobux shared footage from the project after identifying it under Steam depot 42151, while SteamDB records connect that depot to an “Upcoming Fatshark Game” with the last known name Scream Prototype. Neither Fatshark nor the Scream rights holders have commented publicly on the discovery.

The footage appears to come from an extremely early multiplayer horror project rather than a game that was close to release. One clip shows a simple menu containing options for regular play and multiplayer practice, while additional footage demonstrates basic movement and other prototype-level systems. The material is rough enough that it should not be treated as representative of a finished Scream title, and there is no evidence that the project ever entered full production.

SteamDB provides some of the strongest independent evidence connecting the files to Fatshark. Depot 42151 is attached to App 42150, which is still identified as “Upcoming Fatshark Game,” while the depot itself retains the historical name Scream Prototype. Its archived files include executables and debug material using “scream” in their filenames, and the associated package records also include both Fatshark Comp and Scream Comp entries.

The prototype appears to be considerably older than the current wave of asymmetrical horror games it superficially resembles. According to the dataminer examining the files, the final build discovered in the archive dates to February of an unspecified early-2010s year and appears to have been created around the period before Scream 4 arrived in cinemas. The available material has therefore led to speculation that Fatshark may have built the prototype as a pitch while seeking a Scream license, although that has not been confirmed by Fatshark or the franchise’s owners.

That distinction is important because there is currently no evidence that a licensed Scream game was formally greenlit and then canceled after entering full development. The surviving Steam data confirms that a project bearing the Scream Prototype name existed within Fatshark-related packages, but it does not explain whether a licensing deal was ever signed or why work stopped. The footage is best described as evidence of an abandoned prototype rather than proof of a fully planned commercial release.

Fatshark would later become much better known for cooperative action games including Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide, Vermintide 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. The Swedish studio also worked on titles such as Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West and Escape Dead Island. A multiplayer horror pitch built around Ghostface would therefore represent an unusual but plausible branch in the developer’s early history.

The discovery is one of a growing number of projects emerging from the enormous Steam archive exposed in late August. Techtroduce previously covered the [[LINK|https://www.techtroduce.com/valve-12tb-game-build-leak/|reported 12TB Valve and Steam archive leak]], which contains historical builds, depots and development files from both Valve and numerous third-party developers. Researchers have since continued identifying material within the archive, including an [[LINK|https://www.techtroduce.com/early-csgo-prototype-valve-steam2-leak/|early Counter-Strike: Global Offensive prototype]] and other unreleased or abandoned content.

The archive is particularly significant because it contains material associated with Steam’s older distribution infrastructure rather than only Valve-developed games. That has allowed researchers to uncover third-party builds and prototypes that had effectively disappeared from public view. Because many of the files are more than a decade old, however, their presence does not imply that any of the projects remain active today.

There is currently no indication that Fatshark is developing a modern Scream game or that the leaked prototype has any connection to future plans for the franchise. For now, the discovery primarily documents a previously unknown attempt to translate Scream into a multiplayer game and provides another example of how much abandoned development history is still being uncovered from the Valve archive.
