Onimusha: Way of the Sword is putting a heavy emphasis on defensive mastery, with new hands-on details outlining how blocking, parrying, deflecting and precisely timed attacks can all turn an enemy’s offense against them. Xbox Wire has published an extensive breakdown of the combat system after playing the game ahead of launch, showing that protagonist Miyamoto Musashi has several distinct ways to respond to incoming attacks rather than relying on a single parry mechanic. Capcom’s new Onimusha entry launches on September 4 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.

Basic blocking acts as Musashi’s safest defensive option. Holding the block button can stop most attacks, including projectiles and strikes coming from different directions, but every blocked hit drains stamina. Losing all of that stamina breaks Musashi’s stance and can also cost him accumulated souls, creating an incentive to move beyond simple blocking once players become comfortable with the combat system.

Parrying is one of the more rewarding alternatives. A correctly timed block can knock an incoming attack away and leave the enemy vulnerable, while repeated successful parries build the Blaze Gauge. Filling that gauge activates Blazing State, which increases the amount of health and stamina damage Musashi can inflict and also increases the number of souls earned during combat.

Deflecting provides a second timing-based defensive option with a different purpose. Instead of simply pressing block as an attack lands, players block and use an additional input to perform the deflection. It does not immediately break an opponent’s stance, but it inflicts significant stamina damage and becomes even more effective while Musashi is in Blazing State. Once an enemy’s stamina has been depleted, players can perform a Break Issen that can instantly kill many weaker enemies and deal heavy damage to bosses.

The standard Issen is even more demanding. Players need to begin their attack immediately before an enemy’s strike connects, using a smaller timing window than a normal parry. When successful, Musashi rapidly moves around the incoming attack and delivers one of his most damaging counters. The mechanic turns offensive timing into another form of defense and appears designed as one of the game’s highest-risk, highest-reward techniques.

Onimusha also includes Blade Barrages and Blade Locks, which can emerge when Musashi and an opponent clash at particular moments. A Blade Barrage begins when both sides attack simultaneously, effectively creating a short duel in which the correct follow-up depends on whether the player entered the exchange with a light or heavy attack. Blade Locks can follow certain parries or deflections and require the player to overpower the enemy, leaving them exposed while also removing a portion of their stamina.

Dodging has its own mastery mechanic as well. A normal dodge can avoid incoming attacks, but performing one inside the parry timing window triggers a Reflex Dodge. Later in the game, these build a Reflex Gauge, and activating a Reflex Dodge with a full gauge slows time and allows Musashi to unleash a rapid combo for major damage. Some punches and kicks cannot be parried or deflected, which means players will need to identify when evasion is the only safe response.

The amount of overlap between these systems appears central to how Capcom has designed Way of the Sword’s combat. Blocking is reliable but costly, parries create immediate openings, deflections target stamina, Issen attacks reward aggressive precision and Reflex Dodges provide an alternative against attacks that cannot be countered normally. Rather than replacing older Onimusha mechanics with a single modern action-game parry system, the new entry seems to be layering several defensive and offensive responses around the same enemy attack patterns.

Capcom has also confirmed that Musashi carries the Oni Gauntlet, which can absorb Genma souls and convert them into power used to strengthen its wielder. The game takes place in an Edo-period Kyoto transformed by supernatural Malice, with Musashi facing Genma enemies and powerful martial opponents while searching for his own reason to fight. Toshiro Mifune serves as the face model for this version of Musashi.

Xbox Wire’s hands-on account also indicates that additional combat abilities remain hidden until later portions of the game, including more advanced options that were deliberately left unexplained to avoid spoilers. With blocking, parrying, deflecting, Issen strikes, Blade Locks and Reflex Dodges all available relatively early, Onimusha: Way of the Sword appears to be building its combat around progressively mastering different responses rather than simply increasing attack power. The game launches September 4 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC with Xbox Play Anywhere support.
