The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes has been announced for 2027, bringing the light novel and anime franchise to consoles with a new 3D roguelite action game. Aiming and Team Caravan revealed the project during Sony’s September 3 State of Play Japan, while NIS America is handling publishing in the West. The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Phantom Echoes is described as the first console game based on The Eminence in Shadow. Rather than adapting the franchise into a traditional RPG, the developers are building the game around fast 3D combat combined with randomized roguelite progression. Players will repeatedly strengthen their characters during runs, creating different builds depending on the upgrades and effects they choose.
The Seven Shadows are a major focus of the game. Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta and Eta are all expected to feature, with the first trailer showing members of Shadow Garden fighting groups of enemies using character-specific attacks and abilities. Director Toshiki Otsu said the goal is to let players experience the Seven Shadows operating as powerful figures who fight from behind the scenes against the Cult of Diablos.

Character builds will change between runs through randomized enhancements. Examples detailed by the developers include increasing the range of skills or recovering HP after defeating enemies, while other upgrades can carry larger risks in exchange for stronger benefits. Players will be able to combine those effects to create builds suited to their preferred combat style rather than following a single fixed progression path.
Each character also has a powerful signature special move intended for moments when they are surrounded or facing particularly dangerous enemies. Those attacks can themselves be modified during progression, with options such as increasing how frequently they can be used or extending their activation time in exchange for additional damage. That gives the roguelite system an effect on both standard abilities and each character’s strongest techniques.
Phantom Echoes will tell an original story rather than simply recreating events from the anime. Series creator Daisuke Aizawa is supervising the scenario alongside Kadokawa, with the developers saying the story directly connects to the main continuity. The first trailer hints at a conflict involving Shadow and the Seven Shadows, including imagery of an injured Delta and apparent tension within Shadow Garden.
The Eminence in Shadow follows Cid Kagenou, who is reincarnated into a fantasy world and decides to live out his obsession with becoming a mysterious mastermind operating from the shadows. He invents the Cult of Diablos as part of the fantasy, only to discover that the organization actually exists. His improvised Shadow Garden consequently grows into a genuine force fighting the cult even as Cid remains largely unaware of how accurate his imagined conspiracy has become.
The franchise began as Daisuke Aizawa’s light novel series and later expanded through manga, television anime and games. Its existing gaming presence has largely centered on The Eminence in Shadow: Master of Garden, a mobile and PC RPG also developed by Aiming. Phantom Echoes represents a shift toward a dedicated console-scale action game rather than another extension of the existing live-service title.
Development on a console project has apparently been under consideration for several years. Producer Masahiko Takeuchi said the team had been thinking about bringing The Eminence in Shadow to consoles since around the period when the anime began airing. The timing also places Phantom Echoes alongside the franchise’s 2027 theatrical plans, with The Eminence in Shadow: Lost Echoes movie likewise scheduled for next year.
The project joins a growing group of Japanese titles targeting 2027, alongside releases such as Fate/Extra Record and other anime-influenced RPG and action projects headed to current-generation hardware. Unlike those more traditionally structured games, Phantom Echoes is leaning heavily into replayable roguelite progression as its defining gameplay system.
The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes is scheduled for 2027 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Aiming has not announced a specific release date, pricing or edition details yet, but the first reveal establishes its Seven Shadows-focused combat, randomized character builds and original story supervised by the series creator.
