Fate/Extra Record will launch worldwide for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on January 28, 2027, Aniplex and Type-Moon have announced. The release date was confirmed during Sony’s September 3 State of Play alongside a new trailer showing the remake’s characters, Moon Holy Grail War and redesigned combat. The game is a full remake of Fate/Extra, the RPG originally released in Japan in July 2010.

Fate/Extra Record rebuilds the original game for modern platforms rather than functioning as a straightforward remaster. Type-Moon has expanded the story, renewed the character graphics and overhauled the presentation while preserving the original premise. The remake also replaces the earlier battle structure with a strategic deck-building Command Card system designed to give players more control over how each encounter develops.

The story takes place after humanity discovers the Moon Cell Automaton, a supercomputer hidden on the moon capable of constructing a digital world known as SE.RA.PH. The Moon Cell creates the Holy Grail, an omnipotent machine said to be capable of granting any wish, prompting a tournament involving 128 Masters. Each Master forms a contract with a Servant drawn from human history and fights until only one participant remains.

Players assume the role of a Master who has no memory of how they became involved in the conflict. Surviving requires forming a contract with one of three available Servants and learning about rival Masters and their partners before decisive battles. Discovering an opposing Servant’s True Name is particularly important because their identity can reveal information about their combat style and weaknesses.

Progression also involves exploring the Arena, where players encounter enemies, traps and treasure while strengthening their chosen Servant. Completing the required sections allows the player to qualify for a Decisive Battle against another Master and Servant. Losing one of these encounters carries a permanent consequence within the story, as defeated Masters are eliminated from the Holy Grail War.

Combat is one of the remake’s biggest departures from the 2010 release. Players now construct customizable decks and draw Command Cards during battle, choosing between Attack, Guard and Skill commands. Attack cards deal direct damage, Guard cards strengthen defenses and reduce incoming damage, while Skill cards provide abilities that vary depending on the selected Servant.

New Commands can be acquired by opening treasure boxes throughout the Arena and defeating stronger enemies, giving players additional options for refining their decks. Because each of the three available Servants has different abilities and strengths, the most effective combinations will also vary depending on who the player chooses. Type-Moon says the revised system is intended to make Fate/Extra Record approachable for newcomers while giving returning players a substantially different version of its combat.

The remake arrives more than 16 years after the original Fate/Extra established a separate RPG branch of the broader Fate franchise. Fate itself began with Type-Moon’s Fate/stay night in 2004 and has since expanded through games, anime, manga, novels and mobile titles. Aniplex says the franchise had grown to more than 100 works across different media by August 2026.

Alongside the standard digital editions, Fate/Extra Record will receive a Digital Deluxe Edition. It includes the game, multiple cosmetic costumes, an arranged music pack based on the original Fate/Extra soundtrack, a digital art book and a digital soundtrack. Those latter items are also included with the physical Limited Edition, though availability and contents can differ between regions.

The January release date was one of several announcements made during the September 3 State of Play broadcasts. It also puts Fate/Extra Record on the same launch day as Until Dawn 2 on PlayStation 5, giving January 28 an unusually crowded PlayStation release schedule.

Fate/Extra Record launches worldwide on January 28, 2027 for PS5 and PS4. With its expanded story, rebuilt presentation and completely redesigned deck-based combat system, the remake is positioned as both a return to the Moon Holy Grail War for existing Fate fans and a more accessible entry point for players encountering Fate/Extra for the first time.
