Nintendo has confirmed plans to restock its limited-edition The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 console after unexpectedly strong demand caused widespread preorder shortages. The company acknowledged that it underestimated interest in the anniversary hardware, with customers across multiple regions struggling to secure reservations.
Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s Vice President and General Manager for Latin America, addressed the shortages during an interview with Brazilian YouTube channel Coelho no Japão at Brasil Game Show 2026. He apologized to customers who missed out on preorders and confirmed that Nintendo is working to replenish the special-edition console, themed Pro Controller and associated software.
Van Zyll described the shortages as a worldwide problem rather than an issue confined to individual retailers or markets. He identified the United States as a particularly strong market and noted that preorders in Brazil had also reached their available limits.

“We underestimated how well it would be received,” van Zyll acknowledged, explaining that Nintendo had anticipated a positive response but had not expected demand to reach its current level.
The Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 was revealed in September alongside the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The commemorative hardware quickly attracted substantial preorder interest, leaving many prospective buyers unable to secure the console or matching accessories.
Despite the shortages, Nintendo intends to make additional units available. Van Zyll confirmed that replenishment plans cover the anniversary console, special controller and software, although the company is still working through the arrangements.
“We are working on replenishments of the special hardware and the software, but it’ll take a little bit of time,” he explained, asking customers to remain patient.
Crucially, Nintendo has not announced specific restock dates or quantities. Van Zyll said he could not provide either detail during the interview, meaning customers still have no confirmed schedule for when additional preorders will become available.
The timing matters because the commemorative Switch 2 console and matching Pro Controller are scheduled for release on October 29, 2026, ahead of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake on November 5.
The situation also highlights the continued interest in Nintendo’s current console ecosystem, which is receiving additional releases throughout the coming months. Upcoming titles include Tropico 7 for Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled to arrive in January 2027.
For buyers specifically interested in the Zelda anniversary hardware, Nintendo’s statement confirms that additional stock is planned rather than ruling out further availability after the initial sellouts. However, it does not establish how many consoles or controllers will be produced, which regions will receive them first, or whether more units will become available before launch.
Customers hoping to secure the special-edition system will therefore need to watch Nintendo’s official retail channels and participating retailers for confirmed availability announcements.
