Tropico 7 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 alongside its previously announced PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions on January 28, 2027. Publisher Kalypso Media and developer Gaming Minds Studios confirmed the additional platform, with Engine Software handling the Switch 2 port. The Nintendo version will launch as Tropico 7 Special Edition and is being specifically optimized for the handheld console.

The Switch 2 version will support Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, giving players a more precise way to manage buildings and navigate the game’s city-building interface. Kalypso says it will also make use of GameChat, allowing players to communicate through voice chat or share their screen. Those features are intended to adapt Tropico’s management-heavy controls to Nintendo’s newer hardware rather than simply reproducing the standard console interface.

Content-wise, the Switch 2 version will include the same five-map campaign built around El Presidente, Penultimo and new rival Victoria Guerra. Tropico 7 also includes 10 additional scenarios, more than 20 sandbox maps and a random map generator for longer-term play. The campaign continues the series’ political satire while giving players control over an expanding island nation across multiple historical eras.

One of the biggest mechanical changes in Tropico 7 is its new terraforming system. Players can alter the physical shape of their islands by removing mountains, creating beaches and even forming new islands, giving city planning a greater environmental component than in earlier games. That system combines with the game’s larger archipelagos, which Kalypso describes as featuring some of the biggest islands in the series.

Politics is also being expanded through a redesigned Council system. Faction leaders can be brought directly into meetings where El Presidente can negotiate with them, make deals or ignore their demands, adding another layer to the internal politics of the island. Elections, speeches, edicts and foreign relations remain part of the broader political simulation, while the player continues balancing public approval against personal ambitions.

Military management has been reworked as well. Tropico 7 will give players more direct control over military units when dealing with rebels and foreign threats, moving the system toward more active involvement than previous entries. Building placement also gains new synergy effects, while parks can be freely sized to make better use of unused space and improve citizen satisfaction.

Customization remains part of the package, with players able to alter both El Presidente’s appearance and the presidential palace. Combined with the expanded construction and terrain tools, the sequel is giving players more control over both the visual presentation and physical layout of their island state. Kalypso has positioned those systems as part of a broader effort to give players more influence over how Tropico develops rather than relying on fixed geography and established settlement patterns.

Tropico 7 was originally announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Kalypso confirming its January 28 release date in August. The PC edition will be available through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store, while the Xbox and PC versions will also be available through Game Pass. The Switch 2 announcement now means Nintendo players will be able to join the launch on the same day rather than waiting for a later port.

The addition also expands the number of major simulation and strategy releases targeting Nintendo’s newer hardware. Tropico’s combination of city building, politics and economic management has traditionally benefited from mouse-style input, making the Joy-Con 2 mouse functionality particularly relevant for the series. Whether the Switch 2 version matches the visual scale and performance of the other current-generation versions has not yet been detailed.

Tropico 7 will launch on January 28, 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Kalypso has not announced any separate release delay for the Switch 2 edition, meaning the port is currently planned to arrive alongside every other version at launch.
