Loki has suddenly become unavailable in several Marvel Rivals modes just days before Season 10 begins on September 11. Players can no longer select the Strategist in Quick Play, Practice vs. AI and multiple Arcade modes, including 18v18, while Loki remains playable in Competitive and accessible in the game’s social areas. NetEase Games has not announced a technical problem or otherwise explained the temporary restriction.

The change is presented differently from a normal disabled-character situation. Loki’s entry is marked as “missing,” leading players to suspect that his disappearance is part of an intentional story event rather than a balance or stability measure. The selective restriction also supports that interpretation, since a serious gameplay bug would more typically result in the character being disabled across Competitive as well.

The timing has quickly drawn attention to Marvel Rivals Season 10. NetEase’s Season 9.5 roadmap places the next full season on September 11, leaving only a few days between Loki’s disappearance and the scheduled transition. Season 10 promotional material has also increasingly pointed toward Gorr the God Butcher, whose Marvel history revolves around hunting and killing gods.

Gorr has not been formally introduced through a full Marvel Rivals character announcement at the time of writing, but Season 10 artwork surfaced through the PlayStation Store showing a figure matching the character alongside defeated Marvel heroes. That context makes Loki an especially fitting first target for an in-game disappearance. However, NetEase has not explicitly said Gorr is responsible, so the connection remains an interpretation of the ongoing teaser rather than a confirmed explanation.

Players are already watching other god-related characters to see whether Loki is only the beginning. Thor, Hela and Angela are among the obvious possibilities if NetEase intends to remove additional heroes temporarily as the Season 10 rollout approaches. No comparable restrictions have been confirmed for those characters yet, and there is currently no published schedule indicating whether another hero will disappear each day.

Using gameplay restrictions as part of the story would not be entirely out of character for Marvel Rivals. The game has repeatedly tied seasonal lore to its playable cast, maps and limited-time events rather than keeping narrative developments separate from multiplayer systems. Season 9’s Mystery of Thebes storyline, for example, incorporated major events involving characters such as Gambit, Psylocke and Wolverine before later developments changed their situation.

Loki himself is still usable where the restriction would have the greatest competitive consequences. Keeping him available in ranked matches means players who rely on his healing, Doppelgänger clones and ultimate ability can continue using him while climbing before the season ends. That also reduces the likelihood that the disappearance is meant to function as a genuine balance suspension, since Competitive would normally be one of the most important modes to restrict if an exploit or severe gameplay bug were involved.

There is currently no indication that Loki is being removed from the Marvel Rivals roster permanently. His character page, progression and cosmetics remain intact, and the current presentation specifically suggests a temporary narrative absence. Players therefore should not interpret the missing status as evidence that NetEase plans to retire the hero when Season 10 launches.

The remaining question is how far the teaser will go before September 11. If more characters begin disappearing from non-Competitive modes, it would provide much stronger evidence that NetEase is staging a multi-day narrative event around Gorr’s arrival. For now, the confirmed development is narrower: Loki has been disabled from Quick Play, Practice vs. AI and several Arcade activities while remaining available in Competitive and social spaces, with NetEase yet to publicly explain why.
