Level-5 has announced Yo-kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain for Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the second mainline Yo-kai Watch adventure back on modern Nintendo hardware. The project was revealed during Nintendo’s September 9 Direct and is currently in development, with no release date or launch window announced. It marks a significant return for a series that has had relatively little presence outside Japan in recent years.
Haunted Domain revisits Yo-kai Watch 2, which originally launched for Nintendo 3DS in Japan in 2014. The original game was split between Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls, followed later by the expanded Psychic Specters version. Level-5’s new Switch 2 project appears to rebuild that adventure for current hardware rather than presenting an entirely new numbered sequel.
Yo-kai Watch 2 follows Nate or Katie as they investigate a conflict involving the rival Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls factions. The story sends players between the present and past while exploring the origins of the Yo-kai Watch itself, with familiar characters including Jibanyan and Whisper returning alongside a large collection of new creatures. The original versions featured more than 350 Yo-kai to encounter and befriend, with some creatures differing between editions.
The game retained the series’ mixture of exploration, creature collecting and RPG battles while expanding significantly on the first Yo-kai Watch. Players could search towns for hidden Yo-kai, form teams from befriended creatures and take part in battles built around each Yo-kai’s individual abilities and personalities. Yo-kai Watch 2 also expanded multiplayer functionality, including online battles and content tied to linking different versions of the game.
Level-5 has not yet provided a full breakdown of what Haunted Domain changes from the 3DS releases. The brief reveal confirms the Switch 2 project and its connection to Yo-kai Watch 2, but details such as graphical improvements, revised combat systems, additional story content and whether material from all three original editions will be combined have not been formally outlined. That leaves the scope of the remake one of the biggest unanswered questions following the announcement.
The project is particularly notable because the franchise’s recent console history has largely remained centered on Japan. Level-5 released Yo-kai Watch 1 for Nintendo Switch in Japan in October 2019, rebuilding the original 3DS game for Nintendo’s hybrid console, but that version never received a Western release. Yo-kai Watch 4 also launched for Switch in Japan in 2019, followed by an expanded Yo-kai Watch 4++ release, without an international launch.
Haunted Domain’s appearance during an international Nintendo Direct therefore gives the project greater significance for longtime players outside Japan. The original Yo-kai Watch 2 reached Western markets during the 3DS era, with Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls releasing across multiple regions before Psychic Specters followed. Level-5 has not yet detailed regional release plans for Haunted Domain, but its appearance in Nintendo’s wider presentation indicates the game is being positioned beyond a Japan-only reveal.
Yo-kai Watch was once one of Level-5’s largest multimedia properties, spanning games, anime, toys and other merchandise. The series became particularly successful in Japan during the 3DS generation before its international presence declined later in the decade. Revisiting one of its most recognizable entries gives Level-5 an opportunity to reintroduce the franchise to players who have not received a new localized console installment for years.
For now, many production details remain undisclosed. Level-5 has not announced pricing, physical release plans, multiplayer features or whether owners of previous versions will receive any benefits. The company is expected to share additional information as development progresses.
