Fortnite Leak Reveals Crash Bandicoot Sprite Whirlwind Ability

Fortnite’s upcoming Crash Bandicoot Sprite will reportedly give players an active whirlwind attack that damages and knocks back nearby enemies. Dataminer FireMonkey uncovered the ability from Fortnite’s upcoming v42.20 content, which appears to have become accessible early through an Xbox build ahead of the September 17 update. Epic Games has not formally detailed the Sprite or its gameplay ability, so the information remains datamined rather than officially announced.

The leaked in-game description says the ability activates when the player jumps while airborne, triggering a whirlwind around them. Nearby enemies are both damaged and knocked back, giving the Sprite an offensive effect that could also create space during close-range fights. Its damage increases as the Sprite levels up, while its cooldown becomes shorter at higher levels.

The mechanic closely mirrors Crash Bandicoot’s signature spinning attack, adapting one of the character’s most recognizable abilities into Fortnite’s Sprite system rather than limiting the crossover to cosmetics. FireMonkey also says the character was previously stored under the internal name “Body Slam Sprite,” explaining an earlier unidentified collaboration Sprite that had appeared in datamined files. Before Crash was identified, that codename offered little indication of which crossover character Epic had attached to it.

The reveal expands on an earlier Fortnite leak identifying Crash Bandicoot and Persona 5 Sprites among content associated with the September update. The new data provides the first detailed look at what Crash actually does during a Battle Royale match rather than simply confirming that a Sprite based on the character exists. It also makes the Crash collaboration more directly tied to gameplay than a standard companion or cosmetic release.

Crash is reportedly one of several completely new Sprites included in the incoming files. Other leaked additions include Morgana from Persona 5 and Blinky from Pac-Man, alongside numerous alternate forms of existing Sprites. Reporting based on the leaked build indicates that 42 Sprite entries are being added overall, although many are variants rather than entirely new characters and not all are necessarily expected to become obtainable immediately when v42.20 arrives.

The Crash Bandicoot Sprite itself reportedly supports multiple variants. Datamined entries include standard, Gold, Loot Hacker, Cheat Master and Bounty Hunter versions, although Epic has not announced how or when each one will become available. Fortnite’s current Sprite system allows variants to alter how players obtain or use the creatures, while leveling can strengthen their abilities over the course of progression.

Leaked data also suggests Crash can be encountered around elevated or mountainous areas of the map. That information could change before the Sprite becomes publicly available, particularly because the files were discovered ahead of the update’s normal rollout. Epic frequently stages crossover content in advance, meaning the presence of complete assets in an update does not guarantee that every associated feature activates immediately.

Crash Bandicoot is already officially part of Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override. Epic previously announced Crash and Spyro among the gaming franchises joining the season, and Crash has since appeared as an Outfit alongside an Aku Aku Back Bling, Wumpa-themed Pickaxe and other cosmetics. The Sprite therefore extends an existing collaboration rather than serving as Crash’s Fortnite debut.

Sprites are a larger gameplay system in Override, with different creatures granting abilities that can influence movement, combat, healing or other mechanics. Epic’s official season overview confirmed that Chapter 7 Season 4 would introduce a new generation of Sprites while allowing players to spend Sprite Dust and build their collections. Adding recognizable crossover characters with franchise-specific powers gives those collaborations a mechanical role inside Battle Royale rather than keeping them confined to the Item Shop.

The Crash Bandicoot Sprite has not yet received an official release date from Epic Games. Its files are expected with Fortnite v42.20, scheduled around September 17, but the leaked content may be activated later rather than immediately after the patch. If the current data reaches the live game unchanged, players carrying Crash will gain a level-scaling whirlwind attack capable of both damaging opponents and knocking them away.
