Earth Defense Force 6 will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027, giving D3 Publisher and Sandlot’s port a firm release date after it was previously scheduled only for winter. The date was announced around Tokyo Game Show 2026 alongside a new release-date trailer. The Switch 2 version will support English, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

D3 Publisher first announced Earth Defense Force 6 for Switch 2 in June alongside a port of Earth Defense Force 5. At that point, the publisher said Earth Defense Force 5 would arrive worldwide on October 8, 2026, while its sequel would follow during the winter. The January 28 date now places Earth Defense Force 6 a little over three months after the earlier game’s Switch 2 release.

Sandlot remains the main developer, while Yuke’s is handling the Nintendo Switch 2 porting work. D3 Publisher previously confirmed that the Switch 2 edition will support local wireless and online cooperative play for up to four players, in addition to solo play. The wider Switch 2 effort also brings split-screen support to the series on Nintendo hardware, with two-player play planned for TV Mode.

Earth Defense Force 6 is a direct sequel to Earth Defense Force 5 and continues the storyline after humanity’s costly victory over the alien Primers. Although the invaders were defeated, only a fraction of Earth’s population survived, leaving the planet struggling to recover while remaining alien forces continue to threaten what is left of civilization. The game builds its campaign around that post-apocalyptic setting before expanding into the larger science-fiction conflict that defines the later missions.

Gameplay follows the series’ familiar large-scale third-person shooter structure, with players facing enormous swarms of giant insects, robots, monsters and extraterrestrial forces. Four character classes return, including Ranger, Wing Diver, Air Raider and Fencer, each with its own movement options, equipment and battlefield role. Hundreds of weapons can be collected and upgraded across the campaign, while higher difficulties encourage repeated missions and increasingly specialized builds.

The Switch 2 release expands D3 Publisher’s effort to bring the modern Earth Defense Force storyline onto Nintendo’s current hardware. Earth Defense Force 5 arrives first in October, letting Switch 2 players experience the beginning of the current narrative before moving directly into its sequel in January. That makes the two releases a more straightforward entry point for players who have not followed the series on PlayStation or PC.

Earth Defense Force 6 originally launched in Japan for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in August 2022. Its international version followed on July 25, 2024 for PS4, PS5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, adding English support alongside the existing Japanese release. D3 Publisher says the game has since surpassed one million players worldwide.

The new Switch 2 version arrives as the franchise continues to expand elsewhere. D3 Publisher and Sandlot have also announced Earth Defense Force 6.2: Invaders from Another World for PlayStation 5, a separate project built around an alternate version of Earth Defense Force 6 with additional content and changes. That game is currently planned for 2027 in Japan.

January 28 is also shaping up to be a busy day for Switch 2 releases, with Metroid Ravenous launching on the same date. Earth Defense Force 6 will be targeting a different audience with its cooperative shooter structure and large-scale enemy encounters, but the overlap gives Switch 2 owners another significant release choice early in 2027.

Earth Defense Force 6 for Nintendo Switch 2 launches January 28, 2027. D3 Publisher has not yet detailed pricing for the Switch 2 edition, but the firm date replaces the broader winter window announced earlier this year and confirms the port as one of the platform’s early 2027 releases.
