Square Enix has released Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- worldwide, bringing the original Mystery Dungeon game outside Japan more than three decades after its debut. The remaster launched on September 9, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, iOS and Android. Its Nintendo versions were revealed during the September 9 Direct and made available later the same day.

Classic HD is based on the 1993 Super Famicom game Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon, which was originally released only in Japan. The game stars Torneko, the merchant from Dragon Quest IV, as he sets out in search of treasure that can help him pursue his dream of running the greatest item shop in the world. Square Enix describes the new release as the game’s international debut rather than a sequel or modern reimagining.

The core dungeon-crawling structure remains intact. Every time Torneko enters a Mystery Dungeon, its layout changes, forcing players to adapt to different rooms, enemies, traps and item placements instead of memorizing a fixed route. Movement and combat operate in turns, with enemies generally taking an action whenever Torneko moves or performs one of his own actions, making positioning and resource management central to survival.

Items found inside the dungeon can dramatically change how a run develops. Weapons and shields improve Torneko’s combat capabilities, while consumables and other tools can provide ways to escape difficult encounters or deal with dangerous enemies. Losing inside a dungeon carries meaningful consequences, making careful exploration and deciding when to continue deeper part of the game’s roguelike structure.

The Classic HD version updates the original presentation with HD graphics while retaining the visual identity of the Super Famicom release. Square Enix has also added a new opening movie and adjustable difficulty settings, giving players more control over how demanding they want the adventure to be. Those additions are intended to make the game more approachable without replacing the randomly generated dungeon design that defined the original.

Its historical significance extends beyond Dragon Quest itself. Torneko’s Great Adventure was the first game in the Mystery Dungeon series, establishing a format that would later be used across numerous games and licensed spin-offs. The series became known for combining turn-based roguelike systems with recognizable RPG characters, eventually branching into titles associated with properties such as Pokémon and Final Fantasy.

Torneko himself first appeared in Dragon Quest IV as a merchant rather than a conventional warrior, which gives the spin-off a different premise from the main series. Instead of embarking on a traditional quest to defeat a world-threatening villain, his motivation revolves around obtaining valuable items and building his business. That merchant-focused setup remains a defining part of Classic HD’s identity despite the modernized presentation.

The release arrives while Square Enix continues revisiting older Dragon Quest games for current hardware. Projects such as Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined are taking a more extensive approach to modernization, while Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- stays much closer to the structure of its original release. That gives Square Enix two distinct ways of bringing older entries to newer audiences.

Classic HD also marks the first official opportunity for many players outside Japan to experience the game that started Mystery Dungeon. Although later Torneko games reached Western markets, the original Super Famicom title never received an international release at the time. More than 30 years later, the remaster removes that regional barrier while preserving the systems that made the game historically important.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is available now on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, iOS and Android. The release combines the original randomly generated dungeon design with HD visuals, a new opening movie and adjustable difficulty settings, giving the first Mystery Dungeon game its long-awaited worldwide launch.
