Nintendo has revealed the new content coming to Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, including a new Hero named Shimmer and a wave-based battle mode called Heroes’ Vault. The expanded edition launches December 3, 2026, and will be available as a standalone Switch 2 release or through an upgrade pack for players who already own Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on Nintendo Switch. The new details expand on the previously announced Switch 2 enhancements, which already included 4K TV output, 60 FPS gameplay and fully voiced event scenes.
Shimmer is the new recruitable Hero joining Noah, Mio and the rest of the party. Nintendo says she specializes in rapid-fire combos and powerful strikes, while also possessing a Foresight ability that allows her to see into the future. Like other Heroes in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Shimmer will come with her own Hero Quest, providing additional story content alongside her combat role.
Nintendo has not yet revealed every detail surrounding Shimmer’s story or how she becomes involved with the party. Her character design and Foresight ability have already prompted comparisons with characters from earlier Xenoblade games, but Nintendo has not formally explained any deeper connections. For now, the confirmed information centers on her combat style, future-seeing ability and status as an additional Hero exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition content.
Heroes’ Vault is the other major addition. The mode places players into battles against repeated waves of enemies, with each victory allowing the party to become stronger before progressing further. Players can pick up enhanced abilities and recruit additional allies during a run, gradually building a stronger team before confronting a powerful final opponent.
The structure gives Heroes’ Vault a more run-based design than the main game’s standard battles. Nintendo’s presentation showed Noah fighting enemies from a more pulled-back perspective while accumulating upgrades and support characters as the challenge progressed. The format has drawn comparisons to roguelike and Survivors-style games, although Nintendo describes it more broadly as a defensive battle mode built around surviving waves and strengthening the party between encounters.
These additions sit alongside the technical improvements already confirmed for the Switch 2 Edition. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will run at 60 frames per second, with support for up to 4K resolution in TV mode and 1080p in handheld mode. Nintendo also says cutscenes will appear smoother and sharper, while event scenes that were not previously voiced will now feature full voice acting.
The underlying game remains the same large-scale RPG originally released on Nintendo Switch in July 2022. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 follows Noah and Mio, soldiers from the rival nations of Keves and Agnus, as they uncover the truth behind Aionios and the endless cycle of warfare defining their world. Combat combines real-time attacks, Arts, character switching and the Hero system, which lets additional characters temporarily join the core party and provide new classes.
Players who already own Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on Switch will not need to repurchase the full game. Nintendo is offering a separate Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack containing the enhanced visuals, performance improvements and additional content. The full Switch 2 Edition will also be sold digitally and physically for players who do not already own the original.
The new content makes Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s Switch 2 release more than a straightforward performance upgrade. Shimmer adds another recruitable Hero and dedicated quest, while Heroes’ Vault introduces a distinct combat mode built around repeated enemy waves, temporary upgrades and party growth. Together with 4K support, 60 FPS performance and expanded voice acting, the changes give returning players several new reasons to revisit Aionios.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches December 3, 2026. The same day, existing Switch owners will be able to upgrade to the new version and gain access to Shimmer, Heroes’ Vault and the Switch 2-specific technical improvements.
