PLAION REPLAI has delayed the worldwide launch of the NEOGEO AES+ from November 12, 2026 to September 16, 2027, pushing the retro console back by roughly ten months. The company says global component supply constraints have left it unable to manufacture enough systems for the launch scale it originally planned. Rather than release the hardware with severely limited availability, PLAION says it will use the additional time to secure more components and expand production.
The delay was confirmed by PLAION on September 9 after months of taking pre-orders for the officially licensed SNK hardware. In its statement, the company said demand for the NEOGEO AES+ had exceeded its expectations and that its current manufacturing capacity would not have been sufficient for a proper worldwide release in November. Commercial director Ben Jones said PLAION explored options to keep the original timetable before concluding that a heavily constrained launch would not be fair to customers.
Existing pre-orders will remain valid and retain their priority position in the production queue. PLAION also says there will be no price increase as a result of the delay, and customers who have already placed an order do not need to take any action. The company has additionally promised a Founding Supporter Bonus for consoles from the launch production run as compensation for the substantially longer wait.
For Standard and Anniversary Edition customers in the initial production run, that bonus will include a free NEOGEO AES+ Gamepad. Ultimate Edition buyers will instead receive a 30% discount voucher that can be used toward a future software purchase. PLAION says the extended development and manufacturing period will also give it an opportunity to secure additional game licenses and expand its longer-term plans for the platform.
The NEOGEO AES+ is designed as a modern recreation of SNK’s original NEOGEO AES home console rather than a miniature system built around a fixed digital game library. It supports original NEOGEO AES cartridges as well as newly manufactured releases, while PLAION says its hardware is based on re-engineered ASIC technology rather than conventional software emulation. Modern additions include HDMI output up to 1080p alongside analogue video connections intended to preserve compatibility with older displays.
That approach makes the system particularly unusual among current retro-console releases. Instead of simply packaging a selection of classic games inside new hardware, PLAION is attempting to create a new machine that remains compatible with physical software and accessories from the original AES ecosystem. Newly produced cartridges are also planned for the platform, allowing the AES+ to function as an ongoing hardware line rather than only a commemorative reissue.
The Standard Edition has been listed at $249.99 in the United States, while the Anniversary Edition is priced at $349.99. PLAION is also offering a much more expensive Ultimate Edition containing the console, multiple controllers, accessories and a collection of launch cartridges. The company says those prices will remain unchanged despite the revised release schedule.
Component availability appears to be the immediate reason for the delay rather than a late change to the hardware itself. PLAION specifically says it needs additional time to secure enough components and increase manufacturing capacity so that the console can launch globally at a reasonable scale. That makes the situation different from software delays such as No Rest for the Wicked’s move to March 2027, where additional development and refinement time was the primary factor.
For buyers who expected to receive the NEOGEO AES+ this November, the new date represents a significant setback, but PLAION is opting to postpone the entire worldwide launch rather than split availability across regions or release only a small number of units. The console is now scheduled to arrive on September 16, 2027, with pre-orders remaining in place. Unless the production situation changes again, that will be the new target for PLAION and SNK’s return to dedicated NEOGEO home hardware.
