Muramasa: Revenant Blades will launch on February 4, 2027, Marvelous has confirmed alongside a new gameplay showcase detailing the remastered action RPG’s combat, progression and additional features. The Vanillaware-developed revival is coming to PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. It combines Muramasa: Rebirth with its Genroku Legends add-on content into a single expanded release.
The new gameplay presentation offers a closer look at how Vanillaware has refined the original side-scrolling combat. Players can chain standard attacks into combos, then incorporate dashes and jumps to continue fighting across the ground and in the air. Parries can interrupt incoming attacks, while properly timed defensive actions can even deflect projectiles back toward enemies.
Skills form another major part of the combat system, covering powerful single-target attacks, wider area-of-effect techniques and ranged moves. Kisuke and Momohime can forge new Demon Blades through the swordsmith Muramasa, with those weapons carrying skills that can eventually be mastered through repeated use. Once learned, players can assign up to three mastered abilities for both ground and aerial combat and switch between them using the directional pad.

The other four protagonists handle progression somewhat differently. Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru and Rajaki can train to unlock new abilities and create charms that provide additional effects for their respective forms or weapons. Souls collected from defeated enemies are used for both forging and training, tying character development directly to combat and exploration.
Revenant Blades brings together six playable protagonists, each with an independent story set during Japan’s Genroku era. Kisuke and Momohime return from the original Muramasa campaign, while Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru and Rajaki originated in the Genroku Legends content released for the PlayStation Vita version. All six stories will be available from the beginning, allowing players to choose the order in which they experience them rather than completing the original campaigns first.
Marvelous is also treating Revenant Blades as more than a straightforward visual remaster. The release includes a completely new English localization and English voice acting for the first time, alongside updated controls, new gameplay styles and additional modes. Vanillaware has also upgraded the game’s hand-drawn environments, characters and animation for modern displays, with support for resolutions up to 4K on compatible platforms.
Several supplemental features have been added for players interested in the game’s art and story. The Scroll functions as an illustration gallery, while a Character Viewer lets players inspect character animations and backgrounds in greater detail. A Replay mode also allows completed story events to be revisited without progressing through the associated campaign again.
Players who want the older experience will not be limited to the revised systems. Revenant Blades includes a Classic Mode based on the PlayStation Vita versions of Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Genroku Legends, retaining their original gameplay while presenting them with enhanced graphics. That gives returning players the option to experience the older mechanics alongside the newly refined version.
Muramasa originally launched for Wii in 2009 before an expanded PlayStation Vita release arrived in 2013. Revenant Blades marks the series’ return after more than a decade and will also bring a Vanillaware-developed game to PC for the first time. Marvelous had previously given the project an early 2027 window, making February 4 the first specific launch date announced for the revival.
With its release date now set, Muramasa: Revenant Blades is positioned as a substantially expanded version of the original rather than a simple port. The package combines all six stories, refreshed combat systems, new progression options, additional viewing features, English voice acting and upgraded presentation while preserving a Classic Mode for players who prefer the Vita-era gameplay. It will launch across PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC on February 4, 2027.
