PS5 Pro Stock Dries Up as Resellers Push Prices to $1,300

PS5 Pro availability has tightened sharply across the United States, with several major retailers selling through their inventory and third-party sellers asking around $1,300 for Sony’s upgraded console. Best Buy and Target have both shown the PS5 Pro as unavailable during the current shortage, while listings on marketplaces including Walmart have climbed well above Sony’s $899 retail price. The stock squeeze follows renewed attention around the console after Rockstar Games’ latest Grand Theft Auto VI showcase.

Retail availability has been changing quickly, so claims that the PS5 Pro is permanently sold out at every major US retailer should be treated cautiously. Best Buy’s product page has moved between unavailable and high-demand availability, while PlayStation Direct has also continued to display the console in its US store even as reports emerged of stock disappearing. The broader picture, however, is clear: buying a PS5 Pro at its normal retail price has become considerably more difficult across multiple major outlets.

Third-party sellers have moved quickly to take advantage of the shortage. Walmart marketplace listings have been spotted at approximately $1,299.99, around $400 above the PS5 Pro’s current $899 price, while Amazon has similarly surfaced consoles from marketplace sellers at elevated prices. Recent eBay sales and listings have also reached roughly $1,200 in some cases, although reseller asking prices do not necessarily indicate what most buyers are actually willing to pay.

The timing has drawn particular attention because the shortage followed Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look presentation on August 27. Rockstar confirmed that the roughly 26-minute showcase was captured entirely from in-game footage running on a standard PlayStation 5, giving players their most substantial official look yet at how the game performs on Sony’s current-generation hardware. PlayStation’s official GTA VI listing separately labels the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced, although neither Sony nor Rockstar has detailed exactly what those enhancements will involve.

That distinction is important because there is currently no confirmation that GTA VI will run at 60fps on PS5 Pro. Rockstar’s recent presentation demonstrated the game on the standard PS5, and the developer has not announced separate resolution, ray-tracing or frame-rate targets for Sony’s more powerful system. Buyers purchasing a PS5 Pro specifically for GTA VI therefore still do not know what technical advantages the Pro version will offer beyond the official Enhanced designation.

There is also no public sales data showing that GTA VI alone caused the sudden inventory decline. The proximity of the stock shortage to the Extended Look has led retailers, publications and players to connect the two events, but other factors can affect console supply and demand at any given time. Sony has not announced a new PS5 Pro shortage, production problem or permanent reduction in US availability.

The PS5 Pro launched as a higher-performance alternative to the standard PS5 and includes a 2TB SSD, improved ray-tracing capabilities and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s machine-learning-based image reconstruction technology. The console is digital-only out of the box, with the compatible disc drive sold separately. Its higher price has made it a relatively premium purchase, which makes reseller listings approaching $1,300 particularly notable.

For now, the shortage appears to be a retail availability story rather than evidence of a long-term supply problem. Stock can return without warning at individual stores, and Sony has not indicated that PS5 Pro production is ending or being constrained. With GTA VI scheduled for November 19, 2026 and officially carrying a PS5 Pro Enhanced label, however, demand for the console will likely remain closely watched as the game’s launch approaches.
