Insomniac Games says Marvel’s Wolverine does not contain AI-generated assets after a strange bathroom sign sparked speculation online about the game’s production. James Stevenson, Insomniac’s community and marketing director, responded directly to the discussion and said the sign is the result of a UV-map bug rather than generative AI. He also confirmed that Insomniac is working on a fix for the visual issue.
The discussion began after screenshots and video of a restroom sign in Marvel’s Wolverine circulated online. The sign appears distorted, with overlapping human figures and other visual irregularities that prompted some players to question whether the asset had been generated using AI. Stevenson rejected that interpretation, stating that the problem comes from the game’s UV mapping and that there are no AI-generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine.
A UV map determines how a two-dimensional texture is placed across the surface of a three-dimensional model. Problems with those coordinates can cause parts of a texture to stretch, overlap or appear in the wrong place, which can produce unusual visual results without there being anything wrong with the original artwork itself. Insomniac has not provided a technical breakdown of the specific sign, but Stevenson’s explanation identifies the issue as a conventional asset-mapping bug.

The studio also says a fix is coming, although no release date has been announced. Marvel’s Wolverine has already received several post-launch updates addressing other technical and presentation issues, including a recent hotfix reducing the intensity of Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators. That patch also addressed several crashes and arrived only days after the game’s September 15 launch on PlayStation 5.
The AI clarification arrives at a time when the use of generative tools in game development remains a particularly visible topic. Other publishers and developers have faced questions over AI-generated promotional or production assets, including a recent case in which Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino apologized for generative AI use in a game showcase. In Wolverine’s case, however, Insomniac’s position is explicit: the game does not contain AI-generated assets.
The distinction matters because the original discussion was based primarily on the appearance of a single broken sign rather than confirmed information about Insomniac’s production pipeline. Visual bugs can resemble malformed AI-generated imagery, particularly when repeated texture elements overlap in unnatural ways. Stevenson’s response therefore turns what had been speculation based on screenshots into a direct developer clarification about both the specific asset and the game as a whole.
Marvel’s Wolverine has faced intense scrutiny since release, with players examining everything from navigation assists to quick-time events and environmental details. Despite that discussion, the game currently holds a strong PlayStation Store user rating compared with its critical reception, while third-party estimates suggest it also had a strong commercial opening. Sony has not yet announced official launch sales figures.
For now, Insomniac has not said which upcoming update will contain the bathroom-sign fix. The developer’s statement does, however, firmly reject the claim that the strange visual was produced with generative AI. According to Insomniac, the viral sign is simply a UV-map bug that will be corrected in a future patch.
