Insomniac Games has released Marvel’s Wolverine update v1.001.005, reducing the visual intensity of the game’s Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators. The hotfix lowers the opacity of both effects after the Senses system became a frequent point of criticism following the game’s launch. Insomniac also says it is exploring toggleable options for a future update, potentially giving players more control over how prominently the guidance effects appear.

The update is relatively small in scope but directly addresses one of the most discussed parts of Marvel’s Wolverine’s presentation. Scent Trails are used during sections where Logan follows smells or other environmental clues, appearing as visible trails that direct the player toward the next point of interest. Audio Sense indicators provide similar visual guidance for sounds, with the new patch making both systems less visually intense rather than removing them altogether.

Insomniac confirmed that it is continuing to evaluate further changes to Senses, including the possibility of adding toggleable settings in a later update. The studio has not committed to a specific implementation or release date, so players currently cannot completely disable the Scent Trails through this new hotfix. For now, v1.001.005 is focused on making the existing effects less prominent while preserving their function.

Beyond the Senses changes, the patch also addresses several common crashes that Insomniac says were affecting a small percentage of players since launch. The studio did not detail each individual crash scenario in the patch notes, making stability improvements the only other confirmed component of the hotfix. The update arrives just days after Marvel’s Wolverine launched for PlayStation 5 on September 15.

The Scent Trail system had attracted considerable attention even before release as reviewers and players discussed how heavily Marvel’s Wolverine guides players through some of its environments. Some criticism focused on the appearance of the effect, while other players questioned whether such direct visual navigation was necessary in more linear sections of the game. The new opacity reduction does not fundamentally change how the system works, but it makes the guidance less dominant on screen.

The adjustment comes amid strong early player engagement with Insomniac’s latest game. Marvel’s Wolverine currently carries a notably high PlayStation Store user rating, despite a more mixed critical reception. Separate third-party estimates have also suggested a strong commercial start, with around 1.9 million copies reportedly sold in its first three days, although Sony has not announced an official sales figure.

Marvel’s Wolverine had also faced an unusually turbulent run-up to launch, including the spread of hundreds of leaked screenshots and datamined assets shortly before release. Since launch, however, attention has shifted toward player feedback and how Insomniac intends to refine the finished game. The quick Senses adjustment suggests the studio is already responding to some of the most visible complaints.

Whether Insomniac ultimately adds a full on-off switch remains uncertain. Its wording only confirms that toggleable options are being explored rather than formally scheduled for release. Marvel’s Wolverine players can download update v1.001.005 now on PS5, with additional changes to the Senses system potentially arriving in future patches.
