Bungie has confirmed that it is beginning work to bring vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations and raids back into the game, reversing one of the franchise’s most consequential content decisions. The studio says the restored material will eventually be available to all Destiny 2 players, although it has not announced a release schedule for the returning content. Bungie also reaffirmed that Destiny remains central to its future while outlining plans to substantially evolve Marathon.

The plans were detailed in a Bungie statement dated September 17 from studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon head of product and general manager Josh Deane. The pair acknowledged that the company has lost player trust in recent years and said its new leadership team must demonstrate improvement through its games and decisions rather than simply asking players to believe its promises. Bungie described Destiny as “foundational” to the studio’s future and said it is “not done with Destiny.”

The immediate focus is restoring parts of Destiny 2 that players can no longer access. Bungie specifically confirmed that vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids are being worked on, saying the removal of those experiences had a lasting effect on player trust and enjoyment. However, restoring them will require more than putting old game files back into the current build, as Destiny 2 has undergone substantial technical changes since Beyond Light.

According to Bungie, returning activities will need updates to areas including lighting, encounters, combatants and underlying game systems before they can meet the current version’s stability and gameplay requirements. The studio therefore cautioned that the process will take time and said additional details about its “unvaulting” work will arrive in the coming months. Bungie views the restoration as a foundation for both preserving Destiny’s history and eventually developing new stories and games in the franchise.

The announcement also clarifies Bungie’s position on the relationship between its two major franchises. The company said Marathon was never intended to replace Destiny, aligning with Bungie’s earlier rejection of a claim that Destiny and Marathon would be merged into a single IP. Instead, Bungie says both franchises remain part of its plans, although Marathon itself is now heading toward a broader design direction.

Bungie acknowledged that Marathon did not reach as many players as it had hoped and said the game needs to evolve beyond the genre constraints originally placed on it. The studio plans to develop Marathon into a deeper survival experience while continuing to strengthen its combat, world and competitive elements. Bungie says future content should provide more meaningful options across cooperative PvE, competitive PvP and the game’s existing PvPvE structure rather than concentrating the experience around a single type of player.

Those plans follow a separate Marathon development update in which Bungie moved content previously planned for September into the larger Symbiosis update scheduled for December 8. That update is set to include a permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, an experimental team deathmatch mode and onboarding improvements. Bungie has also said Marathon is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule.

At the studio level, Bungie says it has simplified its priorities, moved decisions closer to individual development teams and placed more emphasis on player satisfaction when measuring success. Its stated commitments now include building a longer-term future for Destiny, restoring parts of the franchise’s past, expanding Marathon, increasing development transparency and communicating more consistently when plans change. Bungie has not yet specified which vaulted Destiny 2 campaign, destination or raid will return first.
