Bungie has directly rejected a circulating claim that Destiny and Marathon could be merged into a single intellectual property. Marathon creative director Julia Nardin said the supposed leak is fake, adding that the two franchises share Bungie DNA but remain independent entities. Her response addresses one of the most prominent claims from a wider anonymous post that had begun spreading through the Marathon community.
The rumor originated from a lengthy anonymous post that was subsequently shared through community channels and social media. Among numerous alleged internal plans, it claimed Bungie had explored reworking Marathon and Destiny into one connected property, with Marathon supposedly representing an earlier point in humanity’s history that would eventually lead into the Destiny universe. That specific idea has now been explicitly denied by someone leading Marathon’s creative direction.
Nardin said she could confirm the merger claim was false because she has worked on both franchises. Before becoming Marathon’s creative director, she contributed extensively to Destiny-related projects and previously served as Marathon’s narrative director. Bungie’s current Marathon credits list Nardin as creative director, while Bungie communications staff also amplified her public denial.

Her response is important because the original anonymous post bundled the merger claim together with several other alleged Marathon plans. Those included claims that the game would move to free-to-play in December, receive a PvE activity called Investigations, introduce Destiny-themed cosmetics, add another Runner and make broader changes to how PvE and PvP progression work. Nardin did not individually confirm or deny those additional claims.
That distinction matters. Her statement establishes that the alleged plan to combine Destiny and Marathon into one IP is false, but it should not be read as an official point-by-point response to everything else contained in the anonymous post. The remaining claims therefore continue to lack confirmation unless Bungie addresses them separately.
The rumor appeared at a particularly active moment for Marathon, which may have helped it gain traction. Bungie recently changed its live-game roadmap, moving content originally planned for September 22 into a larger December 8 update called Symbiosis. The studio is also abandoning a strict seasonal schedule in favor of releasing major content when individual updates are ready.
Symbiosis will include Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a new Runner shell, a social space with a firing range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode and improvements for new players. Before that, Bungie plans to release the Nightfall Refresh on October 6, resetting progression and the in-game economy while introducing new rewards, quality-of-life changes and live-game tuning. Those are confirmed changes from Bungie and should be kept separate from the unverified claims circulating in the anonymous leak.
There are understandable reasons players might draw connections between Destiny and Marathon. Both are Bungie science-fiction shooters, and many developers have experience across the studio’s projects. Marathon also increasingly includes systems such as permanent PvE activities, social spaces and long-term progression that may feel familiar to players of Bungie’s previous live-service games.
Shared design experience, however, does not mean the two franchises are being combined narratively or commercially. Nardin specifically described them as separate entities despite sharing the same underlying Bungie creative DNA. That makes the rumored attempt to turn Marathon into an early chapter of Destiny’s universe one part of the leak that can now be definitively discarded.
Bungie has not announced any plan to merge Destiny and Marathon, and Nardin’s statement makes clear that the supposed internal effort described by the anonymous post is not real. Other claims from that post, including free-to-play plans and additional modes or cosmetics, remain unverified rather than confirmed simply because they appeared alongside it.
For now, Marathon’s actual roadmap remains the one Bungie has published publicly: the Nightfall Refresh on October 6, followed by Symbiosis on December 8 and further updates planned beyond that point. The Destiny merger theory, meanwhile, has now received a direct denial from Marathon’s creative director.
