Call of Duty: WWII is currently available to claim for free on the PlayStation Store in the UK and several other regions, despite Sony and Activision announcing no corresponding promotion. The unexpected price change applies to the standard PS4 version of Sledgehammer Games’ 2017 shooter rather than its Gold or Digital Deluxe editions. Players in multiple countries have successfully added the game to their libraries without requiring PlayStation Plus.

The availability was highlighted by Call of Duty specialist CharlieIntel on October 6 and has since been independently reproduced by PlayStation-focused outlets and users. Push Square confirmed that the standard edition could be claimed at no additional cost through the UK PlayStation Store, while users have reported successful redemptions in countries including France, India, Turkey, Sweden, Spain and South Africa. Availability is inconsistent, however, and some storefronts do not appear to be participating.

Players may also need to manually select the correct edition. The PlayStation Store can default to Call of Duty: WWII Gold Edition or Digital Deluxe Edition, both of which continue to carry normal prices or discounts in some regions. Users who switch to the standard PS4 release have reported seeing the free option even when the storefront initially presents a paid version.

The situation is notably different in the United States. The US PlayStation listing continues to show Call of Duty: WWII as a paid title, while reports from Europe and other markets indicate that the zero-price standard edition can be added directly to an account. That regional inconsistency is one reason it remains unclear whether the offer is intentional or the result of a PlayStation Store pricing error.

Neither Sony nor Activision has announced Call of Duty: WWII as part of a new giveaway as of October 6. There is also no publicly stated end time for the free availability, making it impossible to determine how long the listing will remain at zero cost. If the price is unintended, Sony could correct the storefront at any time, although there has been no indication that accounts claiming the game will face any penalty.

Call of Duty: WWII originally launched in November 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, it returned the franchise to a historical setting after several years of increasingly futuristic entries. Its campaign follows members of the US 1st Infantry Division across the European theater, beginning with the Normandy landings and continuing through major battles toward Germany.

The game also includes traditional Call of Duty multiplayer and its own cooperative Nazi Zombies mode. Multiplayer marked a return to boots-on-the-ground movement after Advanced Warfare, Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare had introduced various forms of advanced traversal. The release became one of Activision’s major commercial successes of 2017 and remains playable on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility, although it does not have a native PS5 version.

Call of Duty: WWII was previously offered to PlayStation Plus subscribers in June 2020, which means some longtime PlayStation users may already have it associated with their accounts. The current storefront behavior appears different because users without an active PlayStation Plus subscription have reported successfully claiming the standard edition. That makes the offer function more like a direct purchase at a zero price than a subscription entitlement.

Mafia III has also unexpectedly appeared free on the PlayStation Store in several of the same regions, with some of its downloadable content available at no cost as well. Sony has not explained whether the two listings are connected or part of an unannounced regional promotion. Their simultaneous appearance has further fueled speculation that either a broader giveaway has gone live early or a storefront configuration has been applied incorrectly.

For now, players in supported regions can check the standard edition of Call of Duty: WWII rather than relying on whichever version the PlayStation Store displays first. The game can currently be added to eligible accounts at no cost, but with no formal announcement or expiration date, the availability should be treated as potentially temporary.
