Former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has joined the board of directors at Skydance following the completion of Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Skydance announced Kotick as one of three new directors joining the newly combined company, alongside Emerson Collective founder Laurene Powell Jobs and Skydance co-CEO Ynon Kreiz. The appointment is effective immediately and comes as Skydance begins integrating a substantially larger film, television and video game business.

David Ellison will remain chairman and chief executive officer of Skydance, while the existing Paramount board members are also staying in place. The company described Kotick as an independent director and highlighted his experience leading Activision through decades of growth. Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is joining separately as a board advisor rather than as a director.

Kotick spent more than three decades leading Activision and later Activision Blizzard, overseeing the company through the growth of franchises including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush. He stepped down at the end of 2023 after Microsoft completed its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. His arrival at Skydance marks one of his most notable formal roles in the games and entertainment business since leaving the publisher.

Ellison said Kotick brings experience building durable entertainment franchises and maintaining relationships with large fan communities. That background is particularly relevant to Skydance because the company has just inherited a much larger gaming operation through the Warner Bros. Discovery transaction. Kotick’s board role does not mean he will directly run those studios, but he will now participate at the highest level of governance while Skydance decides how to use its expanded portfolio.

The appointment comes at the same time Skydance is combining Paramount’s gaming operations with Warner Bros. Games. The newly unified organization places studios and franchises from both companies under a broader games and experiences structure, with Paramount and Warner Bros. Games now operating together under Skydance. That portfolio includes developers such as NetherRealm Studios, Rocksteady Studios, Avalanche Software and TT Games, alongside Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media.

Warner Bros.’ side also brings major gaming properties including Mortal Kombat, DC, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, while Paramount contributes franchises such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, South Park, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Trek. Skydance has not announced any new projects tied to Kotick’s appointment, nor has it said he will have a specific operational role within the games business. His influence will instead come through the board as the company sets its broader corporate and franchise strategy.

The timing makes Kotick’s addition more consequential than a routine board appointment. Skydance has only just completed the approximately $110 billion Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition and is beginning the process of combining overlapping businesses across entertainment, streaming and interactive media. The company’s games division is therefore entering a period where investment priorities, studio structures and franchise plans could all be reassessed.

Kotick’s history at Activision Blizzard also makes his appointment especially notable within the games industry. He led the publisher through major acquisitions and consolidation, including the creation of Activision Blizzard itself and the expansion of Call of Duty into one of gaming’s largest annual franchises. At the same time, his tenure was controversial, particularly during the workplace misconduct investigations and lawsuits that affected Activision Blizzard before its sale to Microsoft.

Skydance has not indicated that Kotick will be responsible for restructuring studios or making individual game-development decisions. No layoffs, closures or project cancellations were announced alongside the board changes. For now, the significance lies in Skydance adding one of the industry’s most experienced and recognizable former executives to its board just as it takes control of a much larger gaming business.

With Warner Bros. Games now part of the same corporate structure as Paramount’s interactive operations, Skydance has become a considerably more important player in the games industry. Kotick’s appointment gives the board direct experience from one of gaming’s largest former publishers at a time when the company is deciding how aggressively to expand, consolidate or reorganize its newly acquired studios and franchises.
