The Defold game engine now officially supports Microsoft Xbox console development, allowing approved developers to build Xbox games using the free, cross-platform engine. The feature arrived with Defold 1.14.0 on October 12, 2026, expanding the engine’s existing support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

The Defold Foundation confirmed the addition in an official announcement, stating that Xbox development capabilities and platform-specific resources are available at no charge to developers approved by Microsoft. The update gives independent studios another option for bringing games to Xbox without switching to a different development engine.

However, Xbox support is not included in the standard public download of Defold. Developers must obtain authorization from Microsoft before accessing the necessary tools and integrations.

The process begins with Microsoft’s Xbox developer registration and approval system, which includes the ID@Xbox publishing program for independent studios. Once approved, developers can sign in to Microsoft’s Xbox middleware portal using their registered organizational account, locate Defold and request access.

After verifying the developer’s eligibility, the Defold Foundation provides the Xbox-specific extension, setup documentation and additional development resources. These include integrations for console user management and game saves, instructions for building and testing Xbox games, and access to dedicated developer support.

Additional console development tools are also required. Some of these resources cannot be distributed publicly because they are subject to Microsoft’s nondisclosure restrictions.

Defold is a free-to-use, source-available game engine designed for developing games across desktop, mobile, web and console platforms. Its relatively small runtime and cross-platform development tools make it an option for independent developers working on projects intended for multiple devices.

With Xbox support now available, Defold covers all three major console platform families. Developers can share game logic and assets between supported platforms while implementing the specific integrations required for each console.

That does not mean games can be transferred between platforms without additional work. Xbox-specific features, including user accounts and game saves, require the appropriate extension and may involve platform-specific code.

The engine already has a commercial track record on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. Titles developed using Defold include Void Scrappers, Fates of Ort and Sector 781 on Nintendo Switch, alongside Trigger Dungeon, which is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The addition of Xbox development support creates another potential publishing destination for studios already using Defold. It also allows developers beginning new projects to consider Xbox alongside other supported platforms from the outset.

Beyond Xbox compatibility, Defold 1.14.0 introduces several development improvements. These include cubemap render targets for reflections and environment rendering, a redesigned Material Editor, reduced editor CPU usage and Metal becoming the default graphics backend for macOS games.

The release also introduces generational game object handles and increases the supported number of game objects per collection to 1,048,576.

Although the Xbox development tools are now available to eligible studios, the Defold Foundation has not announced a specific Xbox game launching alongside the update. The announcement establishes official development support rather than confirming any upcoming Xbox releases built with the engine.

For developers, the principal change is that Defold projects can now target Xbox consoles through an officially supported workflow, with access to the required engine resources provided free of charge once Microsoft’s developer approval requirements have been met.
