Microsoft has begun testing pay-as-you-go Xbox Cloud Gaming access, allowing eligible Xbox Insiders to purchase streaming hours without an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Announced on October 21, 2026, the preview introduces three cloud playtime packages starting at $3.99 for 10 hours, with broader availability planned for November.
According to Microsoft’s official Xbox Wire announcement, the new option is currently available to eligible Xbox Insiders who do not have an active Game Pass subscription. Participants can purchase cloud gaming hours, stream supported games and provide feedback before the service expands beyond the preview program.
Microsoft has confirmed three introductory pricing options: $3.99 for 10 hours, $7.99 for 25 hours and $11.99 for 50 hours. The larger packages offer progressively lower hourly costs, with the 50-hour option working out to approximately $0.24 per hour compared with $0.40 per hour for the smallest package.

Unlike a recurring subscription, purchased cloud playtime remains available until it is used. Microsoft has not announced an expiration date for unused purchased hours.
All three packages provide ad-free cloud gaming, shorter waiting times and high-quality streaming. However, purchasing cloud playtime does not automatically provide access to the entire Game Pass library. Players must own an eligible cloud-playable game or use a supported free-to-play title.
Availability also depends on the player’s market, device, account eligibility and Xbox Insider preview ring. Microsoft has not published a complete list of supported regions or confirmed that every Insider will immediately qualify for the test.
The preview is part of Microsoft’s wider restructuring of Xbox Cloud Gaming access. In September, the company announced that Game Pass subscriptions would receive monthly cloud gaming limits beginning in November 2026. Game Pass Ultimate will include 15 hours per month, Premium will include 10 hours and Essential will include five hours.
Subscribers who exceed their monthly allowances will be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. The changes introduce paid hourly access alongside the existing subscription system, although Microsoft has not yet clarified whether the introductory preview prices will remain unchanged for the wider launch.
The new purchasing model also arrives amid reports of potential à -la-carte Xbox Game Pass subscription options, which could further change how players pay for individual Xbox services. Unlike those reported subscription plans, the cloud playtime packages have now been officially confirmed.
Microsoft is separately testing free, advertisement-supported cloud gaming with Xbox Insiders. That option allows eligible players to stream supported games without purchasing cloud hours, providing another alternative to maintaining a Game Pass subscription.
Players interested in the paid preview can join the Xbox Insider Program through the Xbox Insider Hub, which is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PCs. Joining the program does not guarantee access, as eligibility remains dependent on Microsoft’s preview requirements.
Microsoft plans to make purchasable cloud playtime more widely available in November 2026. An exact rollout date, final regional pricing and a complete list of eligible games have not yet been announced.
