Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. The new version was announced during Nintendo’s September 9 Direct and will run natively on Switch 2 rather than relying on cloud streaming. It also includes an exclusive set of 1980s glam-rock-inspired outfits for the Guardians.
The release gives Nintendo players a substantially different way to experience Eidos-Montréal’s 2021 action-adventure. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy previously came to the original Nintendo Switch as a cloud version, meaning the game was streamed from remote servers instead of running directly on the hardware. Encore Edition removes that requirement by offering a native Switch 2 release that can be played without the constant internet connection demanded by the earlier version.
Nintendo describes Encore Edition as optimized specifically for Switch 2. The company has not yet detailed every technical target, so final resolution, frame rate and other visual settings remain unconfirmed. Even so, the shift from a cloud-streamed release to a dedicated version is the most important technical change for Nintendo players, particularly for anyone who avoided the original Switch edition because of latency, connection quality or internet requirements.
Encore Edition will also add a new cosmetic bonus not included in the original game. Nintendo has confirmed an exclusive collection of 1980s glam-rock-inspired outfits for the Guardians, fitting the game’s heavy use of licensed rock music and Star-Lord’s obsession with the era. No additional story expansion or major gameplay content has been announced as part of the Switch 2 edition.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord, alongside Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot as the newly formed team becomes entangled in a crisis threatening the galaxy. Players directly control Star-Lord in combat while issuing commands to the other Guardians, combining his Element Blasters and movement abilities with each teammate’s signature attacks. Dialogue choices also influence conversations and certain moments throughout the story, although the game follows a largely authored narrative rather than a branching RPG structure.
The title was originally developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix in October 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Switch Cloud Version launched alongside the other platforms, providing Nintendo players access despite the original hardware being unable to run the full game locally. The publishing rights later shifted after Embracer Group acquired Eidos-Montréal from Square Enix in 2022.
Encore Edition joins a growing list of games that are receiving dedicated Switch 2 releases after appearing on Nintendo’s previous system in compromised or alternative forms. The newer hardware has allowed publishers to bring across titles that were previously dependent on cloud streaming, heavily reduced settings or skipped Nintendo entirely. That has made ports of existing AAA games a notable part of the Switch 2 software lineup alongside new releases.
The November 5 date will also put Guardians of the Galaxy into a busy period for Switch 2 software. Several publishers are using the stronger hardware to revisit games that were difficult to deliver on the original Switch, while Nintendo continues expanding the system with both new first-party releases and upgraded versions of existing titles. Encore Edition fits squarely into that trend by replacing a streaming-only release with a conventional native port.
Pre-orders for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition are opening through the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo has not yet provided a full technical specification sheet or confirmed whether the Switch 2 version will receive any further platform-specific functionality beyond its optimization and exclusive outfits.
