Minecraft is now available as a native Nintendo Switch 2 game, and Mojang has confirmed several upgrade options for players who already own the original Switch version. Following the October 27, 2026 launch, eligible digital owners can claim the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most regions, while discounted upgrades to the Deluxe and Ultimate Collections are also available.
The offers are time-limited, running from October 27, 2026, at 9 AM Pacific Time until January 31, 2027, at 9 AM Pacific Time. Physical-copy owners have a separate discounted purchase option, although the free Standard Edition upgrade is reserved for eligible digital purchases.
Players who own a digital version of Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch can obtain the native Switch 2 Standard Edition through the Nintendo eShop without an additional charge in most territories. The offer excludes Japan, Taiwan and Thailand from the completely free upgrade, with fees of 100 yen, NT$30 and 25 baht, respectively.

Existing digital owners can alternatively purchase discounted upgrades to the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection through the Nintendo eShop. Mojang has not specified universal discount amounts in its launch announcement, so the applicable price depends on the offer displayed in the player’s region.
Physical owners can also access an upgrade discount, but through a different process. Launching the original Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft on a Switch 2 during the promotional period displays an in-game message offering a discounted digital Ultimate Collection purchase. Players must follow the link in that message to access the offer.
This distinction matters because owning the original game on a cartridge does not automatically qualify players for the free digital Standard Edition upgrade.
The native Switch 2 release is available in three digital configurations: Standard Edition, Deluxe Collection and Ultimate Collection. A physical Standard Edition is also offered through retailers. All three digital editions include the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, while the Deluxe and Ultimate Collections add supplementary content, including add-ons and Minecoins.
Beyond the upgrade arrangements, the Switch 2 version introduces Mojang’s Vibrant Visuals graphics enhancement, enabled by default. The feature improves directional lighting, dynamic shadows, volumetric fog and water reflections, taking advantage of the newer console’s hardware.
Vibrant Visuals also supports compatible Minecraft Marketplace content, although Mojang notes that the enhancements are unavailable in certain situations, including split-screen gameplay and some Marketplace worlds.
The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack has received a corresponding visual update. It includes a Mario-themed world featuring locations such as Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza, alongside 15 music tracks and 40 character skins inspired by Nintendo’s franchise.
Players upgrading from the original Switch version can carry over their existing Minecraft worlds to the Switch 2 edition. Mojang has confirmed world migration support, allowing players to continue their established creations rather than starting again.
Cross-platform multiplayer remains supported through Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Online multiplayer requires the appropriate Nintendo Switch Online membership, while cross-platform functionality requires a Microsoft account.
The Switch 2 launch also coincides with Minecraft Bedrock Edition 26.60, a broader update introducing experimental content from the game’s upcoming winter-themed drop. Players who enable the relevant experimental features can explore Ice Cave biomes containing icicles, ice crystals and the hostile Frostbite mob.
Ice Caves generate beneath colder Overworld biomes and feature terrain made primarily from packed ice and calcite. Frostbites can appear alongside other underground enemies, introducing an additional threat within the experimental biome.
Mojang says Bedrock 26.60 also includes more than 600 bug fixes. Switch 2-specific changes include improved split-screen performance and a fix for interface elements appearing in world preview images when Vibrant Visuals is enabled. Other fixes address stability issues affecting Nintendo Switch systems and graphical problems across supported platforms.
The Ice Cave and Frostbite additions remain experimental rather than fully released gameplay features. They are separate from the native Switch 2 edition’s confirmed graphics improvements and upgrade options.
For existing Minecraft players, the main consideration is purchase eligibility. Digital owners can obtain the Standard Edition upgrade free in most regions before January 31, 2027, while physical owners must use the separate in-game Ultimate Collection discount if they want to take advantage of the promotional offer.
