Nintendo has shared early character sketches and environmental artwork from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 remake, offering a closer look at how the development team redesigned the Nintendo 64 classic. The artwork appeared in the second part of Nintendo’s Ask the Developer Vol. 24 interview, published on November 2, 2026, ahead of the game’s November 5 release.

The interview features art director Aya Shida, director HokWai Ng, program director Hiroki Taguchi and other members of the development team discussing how they rebuilt the game’s characters and environments. Rather than simply increasing graphical realism, Nintendo sought to preserve the original adventure’s distinctive combination of mysterious environments and unusual characters.

Shida explained that Hyrule’s slightly dark atmosphere, contrasted with its colorful and eccentric inhabitants, was central to the original game’s identity. The challenge was to create a more detailed and believable world without losing the dreamlike quality that made Ocarina of Time recognizable.

During early development, the art team used phrases such as “a puppet-show feel” and “the analog feel of practical effects films” to establish its visual direction. These references helped communicate an approach in which characters and environments would feel physically convincing while retaining their fantasy-inspired designs.

The newly revealed concept sketches show early interpretations of Link, Princess Zelda and other characters. Alongside these drawings, the team developed a three-dimensional model of the Great Deku Tree, experimenting with lighting and textures to demonstrate how the redesigned characters could fit naturally into the rebuilt world.

Shida emphasized that the team was careful not to discard the characters’ familiar identities. Although the new designs differ noticeably from their Nintendo 64 counterparts, the developers wanted players to recognize each character through their overall appearance, distinctive features and presence.

The interview also reveals how far Nintendo went to establish believable material details. For Young Link’s clothing, the designers studied historical fabrics in museums and experimented with producing their own woven materials. The intention was to make his outfit resemble something that children living in Kokiri Forest could realistically have made, rather than clothing manufactured using modern techniques.

According to Shida, the improved capabilities of Nintendo Switch 2 made these finer visual details possible, but they also required more extensive research into how objects and materials should appear.

The development team applied a similar philosophy to character animations and environmental interactions. Taguchi explained that the programmers worked to reinforce the impression of a living world through character behavior, movement and environmental details, including the way grass responds in the overworld.

Nintendo also confirmed that the remake retains the original game’s separate geographical areas rather than transforming Hyrule into one seamless open world. Ng said the team wanted to preserve the experience of moving from Kokiri Forest into Hyrule Field and discovering new locations through distinct transitions.

For the remake’s world map, Nintendo commissioned the artist responsible for the original Nintendo 64 illustrations to create a new version. The team also adjusted environmental detail and landmark proportions to maintain the original sense of scale while making explorable locations visually distinguishable from distant scenery.

Shida described Hyrule Field as a particular challenge because the developers needed to communicate the landscape’s size without suggesting that every visible mountain or distant area could be explored. They addressed this by concentrating detail in accessible areas and emphasizing recognizable landmarks such as Hyrule Castle and the windmill.

These decisions reflect the development team’s guiding principle that “the visuals may change, but the experience does not.” The remake introduces substantially revised artwork and greater environmental detail while preserving the structure and visual identity of the 1998 original.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, priced at $59.99 in the United States. Its release also coincides with renewed attention surrounding the classic adventure, including Google's interactive Ocarina of Time Easter egg, which recreates the search engine’s 1998 appearance.

Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview series will continue with two additional parts on November 3, providing further details about the remake’s development.
