Stronghold 4 has been delayed from December 7, 2026, to April 20, 2027, developer Firefly Studios announced on November 3. The medieval real-time strategy and city-building sequel will enter Steam Early Access more than four months later than originally planned, giving the studio additional time to address player feedback and complete development work. The revised launch will also include the game’s economic campaign, which was previously scheduled to arrive in a later Early Access update.
Firefly Studios head Nick Tannahill confirmed the postponement in a video message, explaining that the decision followed feedback from the game’s recent Steam Next Fest demo and challenges encountered during development. The studio also considered the crowded holiday release calendar when choosing the new date.
Tannahill said the team wanted more time to improve the experience before players gained access to the game. Although the public demo featured skirmish battles and free building, some units and enemy behavior were still unfinished. Feedback from players highlighted areas the developers now intend to address ahead of launch.

The studio also acknowledged that certain aspects of Stronghold 4’s design and implementation had taken longer than anticipated. Moving the release into April gives Firefly additional time to refine those systems rather than launching on the previously announced December date.
The most significant change to the Early Access roadmap concerns the economic campaign. Originally planned as a post-launch addition, the campaign will now be available when Stronghold 4 enters Early Access on April 20.
Firefly Studios considers economic simulation a central part of the Stronghold experience, making its inclusion at launch an important improvement over the original content plan. Players will be able to access both the narrative story campaign and the economic campaign from the beginning.
The revised Early Access launch is also planned to include the full story campaign, custom skirmish, a dedicated skirmish trail and Free Build mode. These activities combine the franchise’s traditional castle construction, resource management and medieval combat systems.
Stronghold 4 is a narrative prequel to the original 2001 Stronghold. Its story follows Penryn of Wethel, a shepherd whose life changes as he becomes involved in a larger conflict. The game combines castle building and economic management with defensive warfare, siege battles and encounters with rival lords.
Firefly originally announced the December 7 release date on October 8, alongside an updated playable demo. That demo introduced expanded castle-building features, including moats, wool production and weaving systems. Its skirmish component subsequently became available during October’s Steam Next Fest, allowing players to test combat against computer-controlled opponents.
Stronghold 4 is not the only upcoming PC game to revise its Early Access schedule following public testing. Emberville also postponed its Early Access release after receiving feedback during Steam Next Fest, with its developers prioritizing additional gameplay improvements before launch.
Firefly Studios plans to publish further development updates covering Stronghold 4’s story, siege mechanics, castle customization, economic systems, villages, weather and game modes in the coming months.
Stronghold 4 is scheduled to enter Steam Early Access for PC on April 20, 2027. The studio has not announced a revised date for the full 1.0 release.
